Mets Potential Targets With the No. 19 Pick

The Mets are going into a very abnormal draft this year, with MLB recently deciding to shorten it to just five rounds. With the 19th pick in the draft, this year’s selections will be as vital as ever with the lack of depth in rounds.

One player the Mets could potentially be looking at in the first round is right-handed pitcher Slade Cecconi, who Baseball America predicted the Mets would take in their mock draft. Cecconi is a sophomore at the University of Miami and was selected by the Orioles in the 38th round of the 2018 draft. Michael Mayer wrote about Cecconi here.

Catcher Tyler Soderstrom is another strong possibility, and was selected to be taken by the Mets in MLB’s mock draft. Soderstrom is a left-handed catcher with a strong hit tool but questionable defense behind the plate.

Prospects Live predicted the Mets to take highly-touted lefty center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong, who comes from the same high school as Lucas GiolitoMax Fried, and Jack Flaherty. This would be a logical choice as someone to fill the void that Jarred Kelenic left when he was traded to the Mariners.

It’s surely going to be a weird draft and unlike any in the history of the sport. Each of the five picks is going to carry tremendously more value than they typically would, and this draft is undoubtedly going to alter the shape of minor league baseball and baseball as we know it going forward.

While this entire draft format is far from ideal, all we can do is sit back and hope the Mets score a good prospect or two to regain some of the stock of their middling farm system.
