While most of the attention was on the New York Mets signing Omar Narváez, the organization may two important minor league moves. As reported by Michael Mayer of MMN, Gilbert Gómez was hired to manage the St. Lucie Mets next season.

Gómez, 30, was actually a former Mets prospect. Between 2009 – 2015, Gómez was an outfielder in the Mets system who topped out at Double-A Binghamton. As luck would have it Gómez’s best stretch as a professional baseball player came in 2011 when the then 19 year old hit .307/.388/.547 for the St. Lucie team he is now managing.

Since retiring, Gómez has been a fast riser in the managerial and coaching ranks. This past season, he served as the St. Lucie bench coach. Currently, he is the quality control coach for Tigres del Licey of the Dominican Winter League.

Currently, Licey is tied for first place in the league partially due to the success of top Mets prospect Ronny Mauricio. Notably, Gómez is part of the coaching staff helping Mauricio tap into his power, and who is seeing Mauricio play more third base.

In addition to promoting Gómez to St. Lucie manager, the Mets also brought back infielder José Peraza. This will mark his second stint with the Mets.

Peraza, 28, actually last appeared in the majors in 2021 as a member of the Mets. Due to a number of injuries that season, Peraza was called up a few times, and he would be pressed into action. Peraza played well for the Mets over 64 games posting a 6 OAA at second base with a 79 wRC+ and a 0.6 fWAR. He was also quite clutch at the plate.

Peraza departed the Mets organization via free agency after the 2021 season. Last year, he played 68 games for the New York Yankees Triple-A affiliate and eight games for the Boston Red Sox Triple-A affiliate. Overall, Peraza hit .236/.290/.354 with 13 doubles, five homers, and 31 RBI.
