The preseason scouting outlets have released their top 100 rankings entering the 2022 season. The consensus seems to be the Francisco Alvarez, Brett Baty, and Ronny Mauricio belong among the top 100 prospects in the game.

Beyond that trio are other very promising Mets prospects who can make top prospect rankings during the course of the 2022 season. In fact, arguably, some of these prospects should have already been included on the published rankings.

Mark Vientos, 3B

B/T: R/R  Age:  22 (12/11/1999)
Height: 6’4″  Weight: 185 lbs
Acquired: 2017 Second Round Pick
2021 Stats (Binghamton/Syracuse): .281/.352/.581, 18 2B, 25 HR, 63 RBI, 2 CS

Vientos has been the highest regarded of all the Mets prospects to miss the top 100 rankings. Keith Law actually ranked him 71st in The Athletic‘s Top 100 rankings, and Baseball America noted Vientos just missed their rankings.

Arguably, no one in the Mets system has more power than Vientos, which is shocking because he still has time to mature and fill out his frame. Notably, he also has power to all fields. Of all the Mets prospects, he is closest to the majors after posting a 159 wRC+ in 11 games for Triple-A Syracuse. Another oft overlooked aspect of Vientos is his ability to learn, adapt, and thrive at each level despite his routinely being 2-3 years younger than the competition.

The only thing holding Vientos back is his not having a real defined position. There are differing reasons for that including the Mets starting to move him around the diamond to find a spot for him for the long term. So far, the reviews at third and left weren’t great, but remember, early reports in the minors on Pete Alonso and Michael Conforto were that they were poor defenders only for them to vastly improve at the Major League level.

Matt Allan, RHP

B/T: R/R Age: 18 (4/17/2001)
Height: 6’3″ Weight: 225 lbs
Acquired: 2019 Third Round Draft Pick
2019 Stats
(Gulf Coast/Brooklyn) 1-0, 2.61 ERA, 6 G, 5 GS, 10.1 IP, 1.452 WHIP, 4.4 BB/9, 12.2 K/9

Allan was deemed the steal of the 2019 draft, and we would actually see him ranked in Baseball America‘s 98th best prospect last season, and like Vientos, he just missed the rankings this season. The reason for the drop was Allan underwent Tommy John surgery costing him all of the 2021 season and part of the 2022 season.

However, as we have seen with Tommy John, it does not cost a player their career. When Allan is again permitted to return to the mound, we will see him again return to the most promising pitching prospect the Mets have had in years. When healthy, Allan has 96+ MPH fastball, a high spin curve, and a very promising and improving change.

The surgery may have an impact on when Allan may have his Major League debut. However, we should see his stuff return, and when that happens, he should vault up prospect rankings.

J.T. Ginn, RHP

B/T: R/R  Age:  21 (5/20/1999)
Height: 6’2″  Weight: 200 lbs
Acquired: 2020 Second Round Draft Pick
2021 Stats (St. Lucie/Brooklyn) 5-5, 3.03 ERA, 18 G, 18 GS, 92.0 IP, 1.054 WHIP, 2.2 BB/9, 7.2 K/9

Ginn fell to the Mets in the second round of the 2020 draft partially because he was recovering from Tommy John. Before that surgery, he had a low to mid 90s fastball with a good slider and developing change with some sink. When Ginn returned to the mound as a professional, his stuff had returned and was arguably better and improving.

The Mets brought him along slowly during the season. He didn’t crack the 80 pitch mark until one month into the season, and he would not pitch past 6.0 innings until September. During the season, we saw his velocity get back to the 95 MPH range while throwing his slider on multiple planes and garnering a number of swings and misses. Ultimately, Ginn looked like a pitcher both honing in and just scratching the surface on what can be a very promising career.
