The New York Mets announced they have recalled right-handed reliever Reed Garrett from Triple-A Syracuse. He takes the open spot on the roster and the bullpen after David Robertson was traded to the Miami Marlins.

Garrett entered the season with two major league options. With one option being used this year, he will have an option the Mets could exercise during the 2024 season.

Garrett, 30, was claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles on June 25. He had been designated for assignment after struggling in his two major league appearances.

In 2 2/3 innings, Garrett allowed three runs on seven hits and one walk. He has not recorded a strikeout.

Garrett has made 22 appearances over parts of three major league seasons for the Detroit Tigers, Washington Nationals, and the Orioles. Overall, he is 0-1 with a 7.90 ERA, 2.415 WHIP, 7.2 BB/9, and a 5.3 K/9.

After being claimed by the Mets, he made six appearances for Syracuse pitching 6 2/3 innings. He did not record a decision while posting a 5.40 ERA, 1.500 WHIP, 5.4 BB/9, and an 8.1 K/9.

Garret is predominantly a fastball/slider pitcher. He will mix in a splitter and curve. Per Baseball Savant, Garrett’s fastball averages 96.3 MPH, and it has a positive run differential.

Garrett would not enter the game against the Washington Nationals. However, he would speak to reporters about his hopes to stay on the roster for an extended period.

For Garrett, he said the key to success was trusting his stuff and getting ahead of hitters. He did a better job of that in Triple-A the past two seasons. Now, he will get an extended chance to prove he can succeed at the major league level.

We may see the Mets make other moves before the trade deadline. Those deals may create more playing time with an opportunistic to prove himself.
