Mets Recap: Jett Williams Homers, Walks for 100th Time

Syracuse Mets (55-78) 2, Rochester Red Wings (61-72) 1 In 7 Innings

In what was a rain-shortened game, the Mets did not have a single extra-base hit, but they got the runs that mattered. Jaylen Palmer had a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. Then, a Nick Meyer double play put Syracuse up 2-1. Young led the way with three hits, which was his second three-hit performance of the year (July 5 at Double-A Binghamton).

  • RHP Peyton Battenfield (1-5, 5.13 ERA): 6 2/3 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 5 K. WP (59 of 93 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP William Woods (8.71, 1st save): 1/3 IP, 0 ER, 0 H

Battenfield was claimed by the Mets from the Cleveland Guardians on September 2. In his first start in the organization, the 26-year-old only allowed one extra-base hit and had his fourth-longest outing of the season.

 Double-A

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (69-59) had their game against the Hartford Yard Goats (55-72) postponed due to rain. They will complete Friday’s suspended game as part of a doubleheader with the continuation of the game beginning at 11 AM ET (Binghamton is up 7-0 in the top of the fourth).

High-A

Brooklyn Cyclones (66-64) 7, Wilmington Blue Rocks (54-75) 1

Williams continued his impressive season on Saturday by not only hitting his seventh home run at High-A in the bottom of the third, but he also drew his 100th walk of the year, which makes him the second teenager to accomplish that milestone since 2005.

There was more history at Coney Island later in the inning when Consuegra hit his 22nd home run of the year, which tied a Cyclones record for the most home runs in a single-season.

With Jersey Shore splitting their doubleheader with Hudson Valley on Saturday, it means that all the Cyclones need to do Sunday is win or get a Jersey Shore loss to clinch a postseason berth.

The Blue Rocks scored their only run of the game on an RBI single in the second inning. As for Garcia, the 20-year-old picked up his first High-A win and he has gone five innings in two of his three outings with the Cyclones. The five strikeouts were the most he has had in an outing since August 18.

 Low-A

St. Lucie Mets (44-83) 3, Daytona Tortugas (55-72) 2

The Mets scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. After back-to-back singles to begin the frame, Morabito tied the game with an RBI double and Hernandez had a two-run double that put St. Lucie ahead for good.

  • RHP Nolan McLean (2.70): 2 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, BB, K (15 of 24 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Douglas Orellana (4-4, 4.53): 4 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 3 H, BB, 8 K, WP (43 of 62 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Dakota Hawkins (0.00): 1 2/3 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 3 K (25 of 34 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Eric Foggo (4.70, 3rd save): 1/3 IP, 0 ER, 0 H

The five St. Lucie pitchers who appeared in Saturday’s win combined to strike out 15 of the 33 batters they faced. Ziegler ended up making his 2023 debut after recovering from offseason surgery on his elbow and a torn right quad. The 20-year-old was impressive as he struck out all three hitters he faced.

McLean followed him up with his second outing of the year and the third rounder this year had his first scoreless outing of his career. Orellana was the bulk pitcher and ended up striking out eight batters for the second consecutive appearance.

Finally, Hawkins had another scoreless appearance to give the undrafted free agent out of Washington State five consecutive scoreless outings to start his career (8 innings pitched).
