According to various reports, the New York Mets have traded closer Addison Reed for three Boston Red Sox minor league pitchers.
The Mets will receive minor league relievers Jamie Callahan, Gerson Bautista and Stephen Nogosek.
Once the players have announced, please return to MMN for analysis of those players. Once the players have been announced, MMN will incorporate those players into the Midseason Top 40 as appropriate.
Depth players from a Boston system with little depth. Great. Three failed starters turned relievers and all three having crappy seasons at the highest levels they’ve played at. Sweet return
You can’t evaluate this trade as very few of us has actually seen any of them pitch. Could you let the dust settle before you get New York cynical?
Wrong across the board. Wrong on the facts. Wrong on your analysis. Callahan has a 2.51 ERA and 1.19 WHIP over his last ten starts and has struck out 20 in 14 innings over that time. He’s a 22-year old who was blistering good in AA earlier in the year, and struggled a bit when he first got promoted to AAA. But he’s gotten better as the season has gone on. Most teams would be quite happy with that from someone 5 years younger than the average age of the league in which he is playing. Crappy year? Not so. Not so at all.
Yeah, Bautista has some bad numbers. But he still throws 95, strikes out 10.5 batters per nine innings. He just walks too many guys right now. Lots of guys do that. Some get past it, some don’t. We’ll see.
And Nogosek was also having a very solid year at full-A. He only struggled after being promoted. But he’s only been there a month. Give him a chance to adjust. Both he and Bautista are now moving to a team with one of the most experienced and well-respected pitching coaches anywhere in the baseball world (Phil Regan) and a former MLB catcher for its manager.
All three of these guys are just 22 years opld, all throw 95, 96, and all strike out a lot of batters. With the emphasis on relievers and hard throwers, any or all of them can be traded again next year to acquire some major league help if the Mets are back in contention.
LOL. Spot on. (See response below).
Follow up: now that the deadline has passed and all the returns are in, let me also point out Brad Kintzler and Tony Watson did not bring back nearly as big a return for their teams as Sandy got for Reed.
