Mets Select Calvin Ziegler With 46th Overall Pick

With the 46th overall pick in the second round of the 2021 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft, the New York Mets select Calvin Ziegler, a right handed pitcher from St. Mary’s Catholic High School.

Ziegler was committed to play baseball at the University of Auburn and was ranked as the top Canadian prospect going into this years draft.

While Ziegler’s ranking by Baseball America was low on the list, he seemed to be severely undervalued on the draft board.

“The 18-year-old right-hander has gotten his fastball into the upper 90’s this spring, showing more velocity than any other Canadian high schooler in decades, sitting more consistently in the mid 90’s. His ability to make improvements in a tight timeframe bodes well for his future, especially as a 6-foot-2, 205 pound-hurler without much physical projection remaining.” – Baseball America

According to many scouts Ziegler has an above average top-to-bottom breaking ball and has made huge strides with command on his electric fastball. His three pitch mix features a fastball, curveball, and a below average changeup.

The Mets feel they got another fantastic value pick with Ziegler. The organization is very confident that the young righty can develop his changeup and it to is arsenal of pitches.

This is two consecutive right handed pitchers selected by the New York Mets with Kumar Rocker being drafted in round number one.
