Mets Select RHP Jack Wenninger With No. 186 Pick

With the 186th pick in round 6 of the 2023 MLB Draft, the Mets selected right-handed pitcher Jack Wenninger from Illinois. He is a 6’4” righty with an athletic build. Pick No. 186 has a slot value of $299,880.

Wenninger was 6-4 in 2023 with a 4.59 ERA. He struck out 76 and walked just 28 over the course of 80 1/3 innings pitched for the fighting Illini this season.

Over the course of his two-year career at Illinois, the 215 lb, 6’4” junior has a 5.09 ERA. He was 8-7 over the course of 31 appearances and 17 games started. He threw 122 innings and struck out 109 while walking just 53 batters.

One of his best career games came on February 18, 2023 vs Youngstown, where he struck out 11 in five innings pitched.

He had a complete game shutout vs Ohio in the books in 2023. He retired the final 21 batters in that game. His fastball sat around 93-94 mph in that outing and peaked at 97 mph velocity.

Wenninger’s pitching repertoire also includes a 12-to-6 curveball and a low-to-mid-80s changeup with arm-side diving action.

Wenninger, the 21-year-old information sciences major, was ranked as the No. 241 prospect by Prospects Live coming into the draft.
