Way back in the offseason, the Mets joined in on a trade that sent Andrew Benintendi from the Red Sox to the Royals. The Mets joined as a third team to acquire Khalil Lee–a piece the team figured would help it with its upper-minors depth problem.

In return, the Mets sent Josh Winckowski–whom the team got days before in the trade fro Steven Matz–to the Red Sox along with a player to be named later.

The deadline for that player to be named was today, and Chad Jennings of The Athletic reports that player is Freddy Valdez–the Mets’ 19-year-old outfield prospect who was 14th in the Mets minor-league prospect rankings, according to MLB Pipeline, and 18th in MMO’s preseason prospect rankings.

Valdez signed for $1.45 million out of the Domincan Republic at just 16 years old and most recently played with the GCL Mets and Dominican Summer League Mets in 2019. He slashed .274/.367/.448 across with six homers across both leagues at just 17 years old. His power is expected to develop and be the primary part of his offensive game. He’s been spending 2021 at the team’s St. Lucie complex as a part of its Rookie GCL Mets team.

Khalil Lee has 18 at-bats at the major-league level this year with just one hit–albeit a big one against the Marlins. Lee wasn’t expected to appear in the majors at all so far, but he was forced up due to the rash of injuries to the major-league squad.

Winckowski, on the other hand, has a 1.33 ERA for the Double-A Red Sox affiliate through 27 innings. He was recently named as one of the top rising prospects by Baseball America.
