The Mets signed infielder Grae Kessinger Tuesday to a minor-league deal and invited him to spring training to compete for a roster spot.

Kessinger, 28, played in 48 games (12 starts) over two seasons (2023-2024) with the Astros. He went 8-for-40 with one home run in 2023 and 0-for-21 in 2024. He was a second-round pick of the Astros in 2019 out of the University of Mississippi. Baseball America had Kessinger ranked as the Astros No. 22 prospect going into the 2024 season.

In 2025, he played 11 games for the Triple-A Reno Aces (Diamondbacks), going 8-for-34 with three doubles and a .770 OPS.

He is the grandson Don Kessinger, a six-time All-Star with the Cubs who played from 1964-1979. Don Kessinger’s son, Keith Kessinger, played 11 games with the Reds in 1993, and is Grae Kessinger’s uncle.

Kessinger can play second base, shortstop and third, so the Mets could use him in a reserve role if Ronny Mauricio doesn’t make the team. New York may prefer to let Mauricio, 24, play full-time in the minors rather than sparingly at the major-league level.
