The Mets announced they have signed minor league catcher Raywilly Gomez to a minor league deal with an invite to Major League spring training. The switch hitter played the entire 2015 season at AA for the Angels.
The New York, New York native hit .291/.385/.336 with eight doubles, a homerun, and 38 walks compared to 28 strikeouts in 244 at bats. The 26-year old also has experience at third base, second base, first base, and shortstop but played only catcher in 2015.
According to Baseball America the Mets have signed minor league veteran infielder Derrik Gibson to a minor league deal. He played in AA and AAA during the 2015 season for the Baltimore Orioles. Derrik is a former second round pick of the Boston Red Sox in 2008.
The right-handed batter hit .239/.350/.292 with with one homerun, 13 RBI, and three stolen bases overall in 79 games. He played center field, left field, second base, and shortstop with the most time coming at second with 46 games. He also has played third base and right field in his eight year minor league career.
Time of year to fill in the vacant minor league spots. But they seem to be intentionally collecting minor league utility guys. I think it is a sign of what to expect of Reynolds, Rivera, McNeil, and to a lesser extent Cecchini.
I think Raywilly is definitely ticketed for AA to split time with Carrillo, who did leave the Mexican playoffs hurt after getting hit the wrist by a pitch.
I´m sure they could sell Raywilly jerseys if made available!
I agree, he should be on a one name basis like Ichiro.
