The New York Mets have signed right-handed pitcher Diosmerky Taveras to a minor league deal.

The 24-year-old Taveras pitched to a 4.66 ERA in High-A and Double-A for the Houston Astros last season. He gave up 59 hits, issued 25 walks, and struck out 60 batters in 58 innings (56 in Double-A). Taveras was exclusively a reliever until a start on September 3, which turned out to be his best outing of the season with five scoreless innings and seven strikeouts. He followed that up with a four-inning start, allowing only one unearned run.

During the 2022 season, Taveras made 12 starts and had a sparkling 1.96 ERA and 11 K/9 during that span. On the other side, he had a 9.40 ERA in 11 games as a reliever.

In six minor league seasons, Taveras has a 4.54 ERA in 281 1/3 innings. He has pitched in 98 games, made 31 starts, and picked up six saves.

FanGraphs had Taveras rated as the No. 33 prospect in the Astros system going into the 2021 season. They noted his fastball was in the 94-97 mph range.

Taveras has also pitched for the Águilas Cibaeñas of the Dominican Winter League during the last two offseasons.
