The New York Mets signed right-handed pitcher Carlos Guzman to a minor league deal.

Guman, 25, was signed by the Detroit Tigers in 2015 and was with the organization through the 2022 season.

Guzman split the 2022 season between High-A Michigan and Double-A Erie. Between the two levels, he was 9-6 with a 4.11 ERA in 27 games. In 107 1/3 innings pitched, he gave up 49 earned runs on 90 hits (11 home runs). He walked 34 and struck out 90 with a 1.16 WHIP.

He was traded in March 2023 to the Chicago Cubs in the trade that sent utility player Zach McKinstry to the Tigers. He started the season with High-ATennessee and was eventually promoted to Double-A South Bend, followed by Triple-A Iowa.

Through 40 games between A+, AA, and AAA, he was 6-2 with a 4.67 ERA. He gave up 45 earned runs on 83 hits in 86 2/3 innings pitched. The Venezuelan righty struck out 93 and had a 1.51 WHIP.

Guzman is a three-pitch pitcher with a fastball in the mid-90s, a slider that hits the low-80s, and a changeup that sits mid-80s.

In July of this year, Guzman was ranked as the Cubs’ No. 51 overall prospect according to FanGraphs. He has thrown exclusively out of the stretch position and had appeared primarily as a relief pitcher for Chicago’s minor league affiliates. Fangraphs reports he has ‘good arm speed, fastball carry, and late-bloomer traits’, which gives him a good relief shot.
