Kody Davidson, the latest non-drafted free agent to sign with the New York Mets, was a two-sport athlete playing both baseball and football for South Fulton High School in Tennessee.
In 2016, Davidson was the 14-A pitcher of the year and batted .400 or higher in two of his last three seasons at South Fulton High School. In football , Davidson rushed for over 4,000 yards and 42 touchdowns during his junior and senior seasons combined.
After high school, Davidson went on to pitch at Dyersburg State Community College in Tennessee. In 13 starts, Davidson sported a team best 8-4 record with a 4.11 ERA. He also led the Dyersburg Eagles with 87 strikeouts, five complete games and three shutouts.
After only one year with Dyersburg State, Davidson then went on to pitch at Walters State Community College in Tennessee. In eight starts, Davidson posted a record of 6-2 with a 4.11 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 46 innings pitched for the Senators. Davidson also closed for the Senators at times adding a pair of saves. He helped lead the 54-11 Walters State Community College to the NJCAA College World Series.
Now a junior, Davidson then went on to play for the University of Tennessee Volunteers. In 5 ⅓ innings pitched out of the bullpen, Davidson had eight strikeouts and didn’t surrender a single run for the Volunteers.
Unfortunately for him, the season was cut short due to the Coronavirus outbreak. According to Rocky Top Insider, Davidson has a power fastball a wipeout slider.
Davidson becomes the sixth non-drafted player the Mets have signed since free agency opened up on Sunday. They previously signed outfielders Brandon McIlwain and Joe Suozzi, right-handed pitchers Dylan Hall, Drake Nightengale, and Austin Faith.
Overall, I see a lot of potential in the 21-year-old out of South Fulton Tennessee, mostly as a reliever, and I am looking forward to watching him grow in the Mets minor league system.
