Former Rays first round pick Jake Hager announced on Twitter that the Mets have signed him.

Hager, 26, was the 32nd overall pick in the 2011 draft from Sierra Vista High School in Las Vegas, Nevada. After the 2011 season, he was the Rays No. 12 prospect and the No. 7 prospect in the Appalachian League according to Baseball America.

The right-handed hitter slashed .281/.345/.412 with 22 doubles, three triples, 10 home runs, 72 RBIs, and 17 stolen bases in his first full pro season. It was an impressive showing for a 19-year-old in the Midwest League. His OPS dropped to .628 the following season in Advanced-A and just .692 in 2014 for Double-A Montgomery.

Hager would miss the entire 2015 season after having surgery on both of his knees. He struggled in his 2016 season return to the tune of a .601 OPS between Double-A and Triple-A. Much of the same in 2017, he posted a .603 OPS in Triple-A Durham for the Rays.

The utility man would sign with the Brewers for the 2018 season. He hit .292/.371/.521 in Double-A, but managed only a .680 OPS in 33 Triple-A games following a promotion.

Hager signed back with the Brewers for the 2019 season. He hit .242/.304/.413 with 16 doubles, 12 home runs, 41 RBIs, and had 107 strikeouts in 366 plate appearances. He did show versatility defensively as he played all four infield positions and left field.

It’s likely that Hager would start the 2020 season in Triple-A Syracuse as a bench piece.
