The New York Mets announced on Wednesday night that they’ve signed right-handed pitcher Yacksel Ríos to a minor league deal with an invitation to big league camp.
Ríos, 30, only pitched in three major league games last season for the Oakland A’s. The reliever gave up seven runs in 1 2/3 innings. In Triple-A last season, Ríos had a 2.49 ERA, seven saves, a 0.87 WHIP, and 30 strikeouts in 25 1/3 innings.
Ríos also pitched for Team Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic to start 2023.
Ríos had his best season in the big leagues back in 2021 with the Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners when he posted a 4.28 ERA in 27 1/3 innings.
Overall, in his 92 big league appearances going back to 2017 with the Phillies, Ríos has a 6.32 ERA across 98 1/3 innings.
Ríos features a fastball up to 99 mph that averaged 97.3 mph in 2021. He also throws a slider and splitter. He’s currently pitching in the Puerto Rican Winter League, where he has tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts in round-robin action.
