According to Baseball America the Mets signed 35 international free agents during the 2015 calendar year, which was the 9th most in Major League Baseball. The Yankees had the most with 57 players signed while the Mariners had the fewest with just nine IFA in 2015.

The top prospects that the Mets signed during the 2015 year were on July 2nd, when they announced they had secured deals with shortstops Andres Gimenez and Gregory Guerrero.

Gimenez, 17, from Venezuela was given a $1.2 million signing bonus by the Mets and was ranked as the 2nd overall July 2nd prospect according to Ben Badler at BA. He was considered the top hitting shortstop in Venezuela and is projected to stay at short with his strong arm and good speed.

The 17-year old nephew of Vlad Guerrero, Gregory was the 6th ranked July 2nd prospect last year and was given a $1.5 million signing by the Mets. He has shown good raw power for his age and while he has a good arm and quick feet some think he could eventually end up at third base.

Some of the IFA that were signed in 2015 actually made their pro debuts this year in the Dominican Summer League and here they are:

  • Gregori Advincola (RHP) 18-year old went 2-1 with a 5.21 ERA and 1.484 WHIP.
  • Nelmerson Angela (LHP) 17 -old old was 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA and 1.125 WHIP while striking out 14 batters in 13.1 innings.
  • Anderson Bohorquez (INF/OF) 18-year old that hit .235/.371/.294 in 51 at bats.
  • Yeudy Colon (RHP) Pitched to a 2.40 ERA and 1.200 WHIP in 30 innings.
  • Wagner Lagrange (OF) Won the Sterling Award (MVP) DSL Mets1 after hitting .347/.404/.417.
  • Michael Martinez (LHP) Walked 12 batters in 7.2 innings and had 5.87 ERA.
  • Kerwin Nieves (LHP) 20-year old from Venezuela, had 3.00 ERA in 15 innings.
  • Luis Pena (LHP) Went 3-1 with a 1.98 ERA in 27.1 innings.
  • Joel Romero (RHP) Made 17 appearances spanning 42 innings with a 4.07 ERA.
  • Boris Sanchez (RHP) Went 2-0 with two saves with 3.55 ERA in 38 innings.
  • Pedro Ventura (INF) Hit .279/.354/.325 in 240 at bats over 64 games.
  • Ezequiel Zabaleta (RHP) Colombian that pitched only two innings.

As we reported here at MetsMinors.net last month, the Mets also signed Dutch infielder Shervyen Newton along with outfielder Pedro Nolasco, pitcher Miguel Pinedo, pitcher Briam Campusano, pitcher Miguel Ramirez, and catcher Andres Regnault. You can read more about this group here.

In December we also reported that the Mets signed a group of nine international free agents including Colombian infielder David Lozano and catcher Jorge Martinez that is also from Colombia.

Another player confirmed to sign with the Mets in 2015 is outfielder Edinson Valdez, who trained with Gregory at the Guerrero Academy in the Dominican Republic.
