With the sixth pick of the 2019 draft (178th overall), the New York Mets have selected Zach Ashford, a left-handed-hitting center fielder from Fresno State University.
Baseball America did not include him in their Top 500 Draft Prospects list, nor did he appear in MLB.com‘s Top 200 Draft Prospects list.
The third straight college senior picked by the Mets in this draft, Ashford batted .386/.496/.543 in his senior year at Fresno State, posting a 0.45 BB-K ratio. He batted .347 with an .899 OPS over his four years there.
Here’s a video of Ashford taking some swings in the cage from 2018:
Perfect Game scouting coordinator Vinnie Cervino had this to say about Ashford:
Another quality senior for the #Mets in Fresno State OF Zach Ashford. Big performance, bat-to-ball skills, 55 runner with a chance to stick in CF. Low floor type money saver.
