Mets’ right-handed pitching prospect Mike Vasil threw eight no-hit innings against the Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders in a 3-0 Syracuse Mets victory on Tuesday night. He wound up losing his no-hit bid on a ninth-inning leadoff single by left fielder Brandon Lockridge.

Vasil, a 2021 eighth-round selection, threw eight shutout innings with seven strikeouts, two walks, and just one hit, a heartbreaking single.

The former Virginia Cavalier cruised through his eight innings tonight, totaling just 94 pitches. Of his pitches thrown, 61 were strikes and 33 were balls. Definitively, the performance was the best of Vasil’s season, and arguably his entire professional career. Vasil entered the start tonight with a 7.04 ERA over 30.2 innings across eight starts in Triple-A. The 23-year-old was promoted from Double-A Binghamton to Syracuse on June 12th.

Vasil came out of the gates hot in 2023, posting a 3.71 ERA over 51 innings for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. Vasil earned the honor of participating in the 2023 Futures Game as the Mets’ lone participant in the game. After his promotion on June 12th, his start in Triple-A had been rocky to start, but Vasil has now allowed two runs or less in four of his last six starts, with his largest run output being four runs (twice) in that same timeframe.

Vasil is currently ranked as the Mets’ 11th best overall prospect according to MMO’s Mike Mayer, and also coming in as their second best pitching prospect. The 23-year-old righty displays a strong pitch selection, including a fastball that was up to 96 MPH in his outing, a changeup, a cutter, and a curveball, the final two of which are considered to be his best secondaries.

The righty has positioned himself to be the Mets’ most major league-ready pitching prospect and could get a crack at the mound in Queens in just a matter of time.
