Mike Vasil was named to the Team USA roster for the 2023 Future’s Game. Vasil was named as the lone representative from the Mets organization.

Vasil, 23, was the Mets 2021 eighth round draft pick out of the University of Virginia. He entered the season as MMN‘s ninth ranked prospect and second ranked pitching prospect.

Vasil has risen through the ranks, and now, arguably, he is the top pitching prospect in the Mets organization. Certainly, he was one of the best in all of Double-A with his being named as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Month of May.

Vasil had a strong start to the season with Double-A Binghamton. Over 10 starts, he was 1-2 with a 3.71 ERA, 0.843 WHIP, 1.4 BB/9, and a 10.1 K/9. He was as dominant as you can get before his promotion.

This has been a breakout season for Vasil, and much of that has to do with the development of his split-change. While his change-up was previously a weakness, the split-change is a weapon he can use to generate outs. Mets fans may remember him using it to strike out Matt Olson in a spring training game.

In addition to the split-change, Vasil features a high spin fastball that sits near the mid 90s. He complements that with a slider and curveball. This repertoire helped him dominate in Double-A, and it led to his promotion to Triple-A.

In addition to his promotion, he has now been named to the Future’s Game roster. He joins current Syracuse teammate Mark Vientos as a past Mets nominee to the event. Current Mets Pete Alonso, Francisco Alvarez, Brett Baty, and Brandon Nimmo participated in the event with Nimmo being nominated twice. Edwin Diaz, Francisco Lindor, Starling Marte, and Justin Verlander also participated in the event but as members of other organizations.
