Update: Marc Carig of Newsday talked to Brandon Nimmo today and he said that he faces two or three more weeks of rehab as he recovers from the torn tendon in his left left foot. Nimmo first realized there was an issue with his foot after a workout on January 18th.

Adam Rubin talked to Sandy Alderson who said that Mets outfield prospect Brandon Nimmo is no longer wearing the boot he had put on last month. On January 29th, it was revealed that Nimmo had a partial tear of the tendon in his left foot. Rubin also noted that Nimmo could still open the season on the disabled list for the Las Vegas 51’s but the team would know better on Sunday when it’s expected he reports to camp.

Nimmo is coming off a disappointing 2015 season in which he hit .269/.362/.372 with 25 extra base hits in 104 games with the St. Lucie Mets, Binghamton Mets, and Las Vegas 51’s. He also missed time with a sprained ACL in his knee that he suffered in May, he was hitting .297/.368/.420 when he was injured.

The Mets former first round pick in 2011 has seen his prospect status slip, dropping out of Baseball America’s Top 100 prospects for 2016 after placing #45 in the same list prior to 2015. We recently ranked out top outfield prospects here at MMN and still had Nimmo at #1.

Yesterday during his press conference, Terry Collins said that minor league shortstop Matt Reynolds could see some time in the outfield this spring. Matt has played 382 games in the field in the minors with 350 of them coming at short and the other 32 at second base. He also played third base in college Arkansas and could be forced into a utility role at Triple-A with prospect Gavin Cecchini ready to play shortstop everyday.

Minor league utility guy Ty Kelly was name dropped as well yesterday by Collins as someone he is interested to watch this spring. Kelly was signed as a minor league free agent with an invite to big league camp this offseason.

Collins also mentioned that Sean Gilmartin, Rafael Montero, and Robert Gsellman could see some starts earlier on in camp as they try to ease their top five starters into spring. Gilmartin did a great job out of the pen last season for the Mets but could be squeezed out of a spot this year and return to starting at Las Vegas. He was a starter for his entire pro career before last season.

Montero is hoping to return from what ended up being a length injury last season that saw him miss most of the season. He pitched in the Dominican Winter League this offseason and looked healthy according to eyewitness reports, hitting 93 MPH with his fastball.

Gsellman, 22, is one of my favorite pitching prospects and was added to the Mets 40-man roster earlier this offseason. He has a great 2015 campaign between St. Lucie and Binghamton going 13-7 with a 2.89 ERA and 1.137 WHIP overall in a career high 143.1 innings.
