MMN has learned that 2015, 4th round draft pick David Thompson, is taking his .294 average and 58 RBI 500 miles south to St. Lucie. The promotion comes after weeks of speculation of such, only to have been interrupted by a DL stint, Thompson’s second of the season.
Thompson has performed well in this his first full season, as his slash line of .294/.344/.474 suggests. He leaves the South Atlantic League as the current RBI leader with 58. He also ranks fourth in doubles with 22, and his .474 SLG ranks 13th.
He is also playing what one observer opined a “surprisingly decent” defense. His arm hasn’t been as bad as advertised, though he hasn’t eliminated the doubts of his ability to stay at the hot corner either.
With the younger Jhoan Urena playing well recently (.400 over his last 10 games) already in St. Lucie and Eudor Garcia on his return from suspension, Luis Rojas will have to get creative to find enough at bats for everyone. Garcia should take a few weeks to get there though, with a probable stop in Columbia along the way, so that buys Rojas some time.
The full roster implications will probably take a while to settle, as this will have a ripple affect on numerous levels. One has to think St Lucie 1B Michael Katz is running out of time to put things together as is a possible roster casualty. In Columbia, Luis Ortega probably gets a larger role on a daily basis, with the aforementioned Garcia passing through.
We at MMN would like to congratulate David on earning his promotion.
If it wasn’t for the DL stints he would’ve been there a few weeks ago. He’s been feasting on low level pitching and this keeps him together with Siena and Conlon. I believe I read that the 3 of them were rooming together in Columbia.
Edit: Oh, I read it on here: http://metsminors.net/three-columbia-fireflies-rising-stars/
Well here’s to hoping he’s on the field on the 20th so I can get a look at em.
Yes, they were rooming together in Columbia. Speaking to David this past Monday night he said being on DL was disappointing because it did set him back. Had he not gone on DL I’m sure he would have been in St. Lucie with his buddies.
Im finding it hard to be excited about him, but ill do my best. Can someone convince me?
Off topic, will mets sign Anthony Kay
Yes I definitely think so, just trying to squeak out every little bit of savings to try and sign Cleveland/Planck/Haynes.
Good power potential (holds Florida HS record) and has played well at 3B this year despite some thinking he might have to move from there. Might be the best 3B prospect the Mets have right now.
Hope the arm and shoulder holds up.
Wow, he holds the Florida hs hr record! He’s a big time athlete: Florida is baseball country. That’s impressive
I’m excited about him. He performed, is a higher pick and brings an impressive resume: Florida HS HR record (thanks Mayer;)
Your finding it hard to get excited about Thompson swimmer00? My question is why? I believe he lead the NCAA in HR’s and 2nd in RBI’s at The []_[], and since he has been in the Minors he has been raking, only thing that has slowed him down is a stint on the DL! So again I’ll ask how can’t you get pumped for Thompson?
