MMN Game Recap 5/8: Herrera Homers, Diehl Hits Grand Slam

Las Vegas 9 (15-14), Sacramento 1 Box Score

The 51s bats came to play today scoring nine runs on 16 hits. Dilson Herrera led the way going 3 for 6 with his third home run on the year. He finished a triple short of the cycle and is now batting .304. T.J. Rivera was 2 for 6 with a home run of his own, his fourth of the season. He extended his hitting streak to 14 games.

Ty Kelly went 2 for 4 with his first 51s homer and is second in the Pacific Coast League with his .394 average and first with his .494 OBP. Brandon Nimmo went 2 for 6 with two runs batted in and a run scored. Gavin Cecchini sat out the second straight game with a sore back.

Sean Gilmartin had another great start for the 51s, this one on his 26th birthday, picking up his fourth win (4-1) and bringing his ERA to 2.48. He pitched six innings allowing one run on six hits with six strikeouts and walking none. Erik Goeddel followed with two scoreless innings, lowering his ERA to 6.30. Chase Bradford closed it out in the ninth with a scoreless inning.

Akron 9, Binghamton (14-13) 6 Box Score

This one was a tough loss for the B-Mets. They tied it up 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth just to relinquish the lead in the top of the ninth, giving up four runs.

B-Mets soft tosser Andrew Barbosa threw six decent innings, he allowed three runs on three hits and four walks while striking out seven. Kelly Secrest came in for relief to pitch in the seventh inning and gave up one run on two hits raising his ERA to 3.97.

Luis Mateo struggled mightily after having six scoreless appearances in a row. He pitched two innings, allowing four runs (three unearned) on three hits with one strikeout and he received the loss after allowing the winning runs to cross the plate in the top of the ninth.

Dominic Smith led the way for the offense, going 2 for 5 with a run batted in and a run scored. He is now batting .295 on the season with three home runs and 23 RBI. His 23 RBI are second in the Eastern League. Victor Cruzado was 2 for 4 on the day with an RBI double and a run scored.

Note: The St. Lucie Mets had the day off and return to action Monday at 6:30 PM against the Jupiter Hammerheads.

Columbia 13 (16-13), Greenville 3 (Game One) F/7 Box Score

The Fireflies completed their suspended game from yesterday. This game started in the fifth inning with the Fireflies up 5-0. Jeff Diehl blew the game open with a grand slam, his fourth home run of the year. Vinny Siena had another great performance, going 4 for 5 with three runs scored while raising his average to .356. David Thompson was 1 for 5 with another run batted in which puts him at 34 on the year, leading all of baseball.

Tyler Badamo threw four scoreless innings before the game was suspended. Johnny Magliozzi picked up where things left off in the fifth inning, pitching one inning while giving up two runs on three hits with two strikeouts. Seth Davis followed with two innings pitched while giving up one run with three strikeouts and two walks. Craig Missigman closed it out with two scoreless innings.

Greenville 5, Columbia 4 (16-14), (Game Two) F/7 Box Score

This was a back and forth game with the lead changing hands four times. With the game tied 4-4, the Drive scored the winning run when Joseph Monge hit an RBI double to right field.

Joe Shaw has officially returned back to earth after a dominating start to the season. He got hit pretty hard on the day, giving up five runs on nine hits across five and two thirds innings. He also had five strikeouts with one walk.

After a DL stint, Kevin Kaczmarski returned to the lineup and he went 2 for 4 with a run scored. Dash Winningham was 1 for 4 with an RBI double. Vinny Siena just keeps hitting, going 2 for 3 with a run scored. He leads the SAL with a .366 batting average and is third in runs scored with 27.
