Allan Dykstra

Update 5:00 PM

The PCL announced on their website on Monday that the league office named Allan Dykstra the Pacific Coast League Player of the Week for his impressive performance during the week of April 14th-20th.

Dysktra,26, was also named the MMN Player of the Week on Monday as well. All Dysktra did was dominate opposing pitchers by batting .450/.593/.900, with two home runs and 10 RBI’s. Dykstra’s .593 on-base percentage was the highest in the PCL last week, and his 12 walks for the season are tied for the fifth-most in the league.

Congratulations to Las Vegas 51’s first baseman, Allan Dykstra for being named the MMN Player of the Week. Dykstra, who came to the Mets in a trade with the San Diego Padres in 2011, has done nothing but hit since and 2014 hasn’t been any different.

In 2013, Dykstra was named the organization’s Sterling Minor League Co-Player of the Year and he also won the Eastern League Most Valuable Player with the Binghamton Mets. To win these prestigious awards, all he did was hit .274/.436/.503, with 56 runs scored, 22 doubles, 21 home runs, 82 RBI’s, and 102 walks in 372 at bats. After the season he participated in the Venezuela Winter League and he picked up where he left off and in 13 games he batted, .395/.489/.526. But after fracturing his fibula in Venezuela, it not only cost him time in winter ball, but also the opportunity to participate in the Mets big league spring camp.

Since there wasn’t anything left for Dykstra to prove in AA, the Mets made the right choice by sending him to Las Vegas to start the 2014 season. Well the power hitting left handed batter, proved them right by sprinting out the gate with a quick five-game hit streak, where he batted .417. After two games where he didn’t record a hit, Dykstra picked it up again and the week of April 14 – April 20, he enjoyed another five game hit streak, with three of which were multi-hit games. Dykstra has solidified himself as a big bat in an already powerful Vegas line-up. Through the past week, the team finished 5-2, and remains in first place with a 13-5 record in the Pacific Coast League Southern Division.

It’s only a matter of time before Dykstra finds himself finally making his long awaited major League debut, and if he continues to pound the baseball and show patience at the plate, the dream may indeed become a reality sooner than later. April 14-20 totals: .450 (9 for 20), 5 R, 3 Doubles, 2 HR, 10 RBI’s, 6 BB.

Honorable Mentions

St. Lucie Mets – INF T.J. Rivera

Rivera was actually the first player that I picked when I took over this post back on August 5, 2013 and now he has earned the right to be an Honorable mention for the past week.  The slick fielding infielder, won the 2013 Florida State League hits title with 145 and after a strong 2013 campaign, it was not known where Rivera would start in 2014. It was believed that he would be promoted to Double-A Binghamton, but unfortunately that was not in the Mets plans, so all Rivera has done since the start of the season is hit. This past week he had a five-game hit streak, four of which were multi-hit games.  He leads the league with a .383 batting average, tied for second with teammate Dilson Herrera with 23 hits, second in RBI’s with 17, and if not for the hot hitting Allan Dykstra, Rivera would have won his second MMN Player of the Week honor. April 14-20 totals: .444 (12 for 27), 6 R, 2 Doubles, 1 HR, 7 RBI’s, 2 BB.

St. Lucie Mets – CF Brandon Nimmo

Nimmo was last weeks MMN Player of the Week winner and he is still on fire in the Florida State League. He picked up where he left off from the previous week and he hit safely in four out of six games and all four were multi-hit games. Nimmo has made a huge impact in his first season with St. Lucie and is a big reason for the Mets potent offense and their surge into first place. The Mets top outfield prospect leads the Florida State League with 18 runs, 24 hits, second with a .480 OBP, and tied for second with a .381 batting average. April 14-20 totals: .385 (10 for 26), 6 R, 1 Triple, 4 RBI’s, 4 BB.

Las Vegas 51’s – CF Matt den Dekker

Den Dekker came into the week of April 14-20, batting .205, but ended it by hitting safely in six out of the seven games, with four multi-hit games and helped the 51’s to a 5-2 week. The outfield prospect, who made his major league debut with the NY Mets in 2013, is no stranger to what it takes to make it to the next level and this season he is part of a potent 51’s offense that looks to dominate the 2014 Pacific Coast League on their way to another division crown.  April 14-20 totals: .370 (10 for 27), 3 R, 2 Doubles, 3 RBI, 3 BB, 1 SB.

St. Lucie Mets – 2B/SS Dilson Herrera

Herrera is another potent bat in the Mets line-up and after being named an honorable mention last week, he has just continued to hit. With an off day on Sunday, Herrera will start Monday with an 11-game hit streak and just continues to provide the needed offense at the top of the Mets lineup.  Not only has he gotten on base for hitters Brandon Nimmo and T.J. Rivera, but he has also had the big hits when counted on to drive in runs. He is second in the Florida State League with 16 runs and tied for second with teammate T.J. Rivera with 23 hits.  The Colombian native is another big part on this Mets season that is starting to look like it will be a special one. April 14-20 totals: .346 (9 for 26), 9 R, 1 Double, 1 HR, 3 RBI’s, 2 BB, 2 SB.
