Brandon Nimmo Batting

Congratulations to St. Lucie Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo for being name the MMN Player of the Week for his performance from May 19 – May 25.

This is the second time this season that Nimmo has been honored by MMN, with his first during opening week of the season when he batted .400 (10 for 25), with seven runs scored, a double, home run, four RBI’s, four walks and three multi-hit games.

Over the past week, Nimmo has continued to do what he has done extremely well so far in 2014, and that is get on base by any means necessary. On the season, Nimmo leads the Florida State League with 48 runs, 45 walks, a .472 OBP, and .961 OPS. He is currently has an eight game hitting streak, and has hit safely in nine of his last ten games and in that span, he has five multi-hit games.

Nimmo, 21, is having one of the best seasons in his young minor league career.

Honorable Mentions:

Kevin Plawecki, C – Binghmaton Mets

Plawecki continues to put the bat on the ball and now he has added power to his repertoire. The catching prospect has a four game hitting streak and has hit safely in eight of his last ten games, with six multi-hit games in that span. Over the past week, he has started to show more of his power as he launched three home runs, including a game winning shot on Friday night to help the B-Mets pull out a victory.

May 19 – May 25: .333, (9 for 27), 4 R, 3 Doubles, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 2 BB

Matt Reynolds, SS – Binghamton Mets

This is the second time this season that Reynolds has been on this list, the first was when he batted .381 (8 for 21), with four runs, a double, four RBI’s and six walks during the week of April 21-27. Prior to Sunday’s 0 for 2 game, he was on an 11-game hit streak and was batting .500 with five multi-hit games in that span. Reynolds continues to hit the cover off the ball while the B-Mets continue to battle for the division lead.

May 19 – May 25: .448 (13 for 29), 5 R, 1 Double, 2 RBI, 4 BB

Dilson Herrera, INF – St. Lucie Mets

This has started to become a regular thing for Herrera as he has proven each week that the Mets received the better part of the deal with the Pirates last August when they sent John Buck and Marlon Byrd to Pittsburgh for the top prospects services. Herrera has hit safely in 10 out of the last 11 games, with seven multi-hit in that span. Herrera leads the Florida State League 216 at bats, and tied with teammate T.J. Rivera with 70 hits. Herrera is one of the good reasons why the St. Lucie Mets lead their division with a 30-20 record.

May 19 – May 25: .367 (11 for 30), 6 R, 4 Doubles, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB, 1 SB

L.J. Mazzilli, INF – Savannah Sand Gnats

Mazzilli makes this list for the first time on the season and he may owe his recent success to Yogi Berra who gave the elder Mazzilli some sound advice. Yogi’s advice for the younger Mazzilli was “If you see it, hit it. If you don’t see it, don’t hit it”, and even if it wasn’t actually those words that got him on track, I am sure he wouldn’t mind giving credit to Yogi. L.J. is currently on a six-game hitting streak and has hit safely in nine of his last ten games, with five multi-hit games in that span. The first place Sand Gnats have another weapon to add to an already amazing season, as the lead the South Atlantic League Southern Division by by seven games.
