It should come as no surprise to anyone that Ike Davis is our MMN Player of the Week — especially after he was named the PCL Player of the week yesterday.
The first baseman enjoyed a week in which he hit a healthy .474/.630/.1.263 in six games. That line includes four home runs, seven RBIs, and eight walks. Those four homers came in back-to-back games; he enjoyed a pair of two-homer games. Davis went ahead and ripped another home run last night — although that one doesn’t factor into this decision.
I’ve always been behind Ike Davis because I missed having a real power source in our lineup. I know that guys like David Wright and Lucas Duda can leave the yard — but I’m talking Carlos Delgado clean-up hitter type power. Yeah, Duda has shown flashes of it, but Ike’s 22-homer second half had me chomping at the bits for a glimpse of those numbers over a full season. There was an extended period of time where I thought that we had found a legit 40-home run threat who played good defense to anchor the middle of our offense for years to come.
Although Davis’ prospects seem to have dwindled a little, I believe in players being late bloomers before experiencing streaks of success. After all, he’s just 26, and has many baseball years left in him. We can only hope this is a sign of things to come and not another PCL anomaly, so best of luck Ike!
