MMN Players of the Week: Martinez Rehabs As Mangum Continues to Shine

While the New York Mets haven’t produced the way fans have wanted them to over the past couple weeks, the farm system has certainly been stepping up in a big way. Come check out this week’s Mets Minors Players of the Week!

Triple-A Syracuse Mets

The Syracuse Mets didn’t have many offensive standouts during their series against Buffalo, but fans of the Triple-A squad got to see some of the rehab assignments of Jose Martinez. Martinez hasn’t played a game in the majors this season since tearing his meniscus in Spring Training. As the 33-year-old outfielder gets closer to a return, he will need to find his mid-season swing to try and help the New York Mets down the stretch. He hasn’t produced much in the minors over 25 at-bats but will undoubtedly come around once all the cylinders start to click. Martinez is a career .289 hitter with an OPS of .803.

Zack Godley tossed a fantastic game this week, leading Syracuse to a hard-fought win over the Bisons. Godley pitched six innings of three-hit ball, allowing one run while striking out four Buffalo hitters. During 2021, Godley has been solid, accumulating a record of 5-and-4 and putting together an ERA of 3.88. He has 66 strikeouts over 67 ⅓ innings pitched, and a modest WHIP at 1.38.

Double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies

Jake Mangum has made one of the biggest jumps in his play from 2019 through now, being a force at the plate for Binghamton. This week Mangum hit an incredible .412/.474/.529 with an OPS of 1.003 against the Portland Sea Dogs. If that’s not enough, Mangum has been even hotter over the past month, hitting an incredible .443 with ten extra-base hits and an OPS of 1.103. Since being drafted out of Mississippi State in 2019, this is the first real success that Jake is finding at the professional level. With such quick improvements at the plate, fans should be curious about what the future may hold for one of the Mets’ top prospects.

The Binghamton Mets started the season as one of the worst teams at the Double-A level; now, the squad is pushing to be a .500 team by the end of the season with a record of 43-50. This quick turnaround was made possible with the influx of promotions and additions to the team like Cole Gordon. Gordon had another incredible outing this week, tossing a complete game (7-inning) shutout out over the Sea Dogs. In the process, Gordon allowed only three hits and struck out four hitters in the process, keeping his WHIP at 0.71 during this start. Gordon hasn’t allowed an earned run over his past four starts spanning back to July 31 against Hartford. With numbers like this, Cole may be promoted sooner rather than later.

High-A Brooklyn Cyclones

After dominating with the St. Lucie Mets, Jose Peroza seems to be finding his swing at the High-A level. This week, Peroza slashed an impressive .368/.429/.895 with an OPS of 1.323. The Mets prospect from Venezuela racked in three homers and six RBIs on the week, an impressive span for the 21-year-old. Peroza wasn’t regarded as a top international prospect when he was signed, hence why he is not featured on the Mets’ top 30 prospects list. Peroza has surprised many and is certainly playing his way into being a top prospect for the organization.

Pitching hasn’t been the Brooklyn Cyclones’ strong suit this season, but with that being said, Alec Kisena has been as solid as they come. This week, Kisena tossed another gem, allowing one earned run over five innings pitched against a potent Hudson Valley Renegades offense. Kisena only gave up three hits during his start and managed to strike out eight hitters. Kisena was ultimately slapped with the loss due to his team’s inability to score runs, but he has been performing all season long for Brooklyn.

Low-A St. Lucie Mets

After being drafted in 2020 by the Miami Marlins, Brandon Mcllwain found his way to the New York Mets via free agency. During his first professional season as a 23-year-old, Mcllwain hasn’t seen much success until this week. Over a five-game span against the Tampa Tarpons, Mcllwain slashed an impressive .333/.429/.611 with an OPS of 1.040 and a home run. Not much is known about Mcllwain other than his time at the University of California-Berkeley, but if he can figure out his swing for this Mets team, he could potentially fit in with this system.

Junior Santos had the best start of the week for the St. Lucie Mets, tossing 6 ⅔ innings of one-run ball. Santos struck out five Tampa hitters and only allowed three walks in the process. Unfortunately for him, the St. Lucie lineup couldn’t muster up many runs, sticking him with the loss. This season, Santos is 4-and-4 with an ERA of 4.50 over 15 starts; he’s accumulated 60 strikeouts and holds a WHIP of 1.55. Santos is currently listed as the Mets number 14 prospect; with more work at different levels of the minors, he could potentially live up to that expectation.
