MMN Recap 05/10: Becerra Streak Snapped, Conlon Great Again

Reading 9, Binghamton Mets  (14-15) 0 Box Score

The Binghamton Mets dropped under .500 after a 9-0 loss against the Reading Fightin Phils. The Phillies Double-A team got seventeen hits against Binghamton pitching.

Casey Delgado got his first career Double-A start and he got hit hard allowing eleven hits in four innings. He allowed a total of five runs although his defense let him down a bit in the fourth. Delgado made his pitch with with a 2-0 deficit and oe out. He got K.C. Siena to hit a ground ball to short but Phillip Evans threw it wide of first. Delgado should have been out of the inning instead the Fightin Phils scored four instead of one.

Overall it was a rough B-Mets debut, he went for innings allowing five runs on eleven hits and struck out three while taking his first loss of the season.

Logan Taylor struck out five in two scoreless innings in relief. He lowered his ERA to 1.53 and has struck 24 batters in 17.2 innings. Kelly Secrest allowed three runs in 0.2 innings and Mike Hepple allowed a solo homerun in 1.1 innings.

On the offensive side the Binghamton Mets collected eight hits but went 1 for 9 with the runners in scoring position. Dominic Smith went 2 for 4 with two doubles giving him eight for the season. He bounced back from an 0 for 5 night and is now hitting .289/.326/.446 on the season.

Xorge Carrillo also went 2 for 4 in the game. Delgado singled in his first just his second ever minor league at bat.

Injury note – Raywilly Gomez was placed on the 7-day disabled list to make room for Delgado on the roster. 

Jupiter 8, St. Lucie Mets (17-14) 2 Box Score

The St. Lucie Mets could not win the second game of the series against the Jupiter Hammerheads 8-2. The Marlins High-A team collected fourteen hits against St. Lucie pitching.

Kevin Taylor had a good day going 2-2. He scored the first St. Lucie run after he doubled. He scored on a fielding error from the Hammerheads third baseman. Taylor added an RBI single in the 6th scoring Champ Stuart. Taylor is batting .373 on the season and

Amed Rosario had a tough day going 0-4 dropping his season average to .331. Wuilmer Becerra had his 13-game hitting streak snapped after a 0-4 day with two strikeouts. Stuart went 1 for 3 with a walk, double and run scored.

Josh Prevost got the start and dropped to 2-3, going four innings allowing four runs on five hits. He walked two and struck out three. Jimmy Duff pitched two scoreless and Kevin McGowan worked around two hits for a scoreless frame. He dropped his ERA to 1.62.

Corey Taylor allowed four runs and three unearned runs in the eight. Jhoan Urena made an error the let the lead off hitter reach. Paul Paez allowed an unearned run in the ninth after being promoted from Brooklyn before the game.

Injury note – catcher Dionis Rodriguez was added to the roster and catcher Lednier Ricardo was sent down to the Brooklyn Cyclones. Paez was added to the roster to take the place of the promoted Delgado. 

Colombia Fireflies (18-14) 7, Greenville 6 Box Score

The Fireflies won the final game of the series against the Greenville Drive 7-6. The Fireflies got a 7-0 lead in the top of the seventh but the Greenville Drive almost made a comeback scoring four in the seventh and two in the ninth.

Columbia scored two in the second as Vicente Lupo walked with the bases loaded and JC Rodriguez hit a sac fly. In the fourth David Thompson hit a RBI force out. He drove in his league leading 36th run. Dash Winningham followed with a RBI single and Thompson scored the third run of the inning on a wild pitch.

The Fireflies added two in the seventh when Jeffrey Diehl hit a RBI single and Winningham scored on a balk by the Greenville pitcher.

P.J. Conlon got the start and was outstanding again. He improved to 5-0 on the season with 6.2 innings allowing unearned one run on four hits. He walked just one and struck out six. Conlon is now 5-0 with a 1.23 ERA in his first season as a starter. In 36.2 inning he has struck out 29 batters compared to just four walks. Here you can watch him strike out his sixth batter.

The Fireflies bullpen got hit hard. Nicco Blank came in with one on and two out after Conlon pitched a gem. Blank walked the first two and allowed a grand slam after the two walks. Christian Montgomery allowed three walks and two runs in 1.2 innings. Alex Palsha allowed a two run single (both runs where charged to Montgomery) but got the final out for his fourth save.
