Portland 6, Binghamton (14-17) 2 Box Score

The B-Mets lost for the sixth straight time with another quiet night from the bats that woke up too little too late scoring their only two runs in the ninth inning. Matt Oberste hit a two-run homer in the final inning, his second in as many day. Colton Plaia and L.J. Mazzilli both got on after him but Maikis De La Cruz grounded out to end the threat and the game.

Oberste collected three hits including his eighth double and lifted his season line up to .305/.359/.484 in 95 at bats. He is hitting (12-30) during his seven-game hitting streak. Derrik Gibson extended his hitting streak to five games in a 1 for 2 night, he walked twice as well and now has a .383 OBP in 2016. Dominic Smith was 1 for 4 and failed to strikeout for the seventh time in his last ten games.

Robert Gsellman had his worst start of the season going only five innings, allowing three runs on six hits. However, he did strike out five without issuing a walk and has now struck out 33 batters in 40.2 innings. He retired 11 of 12 at one point but game up two runs in his first inning and one in his last.

Reliever Logan Taylor had his scoreless streak snapped at 9.2 innings when he allowed three runs in his two innings of work. He continues to rack up the strikeouts though, with three more last night and 16 over his last nine innings. Lefty David Roseboom came in with the bases loaded, retiring the only batter he faced and has now gone scoreless in his last five appearances.

Here you can watch the blast from Oberste that went over the Maine Monster in left field.

Jupiter 4, St. Lucie (18-15) 1 Box Score

It was an unusually quite night for the Mets bats who came into the game leading the league in batting but went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position against the Hammerheads. Champ Stuart had a great night out of the leadoff spot with two hits including his fourth triple and scored the only run of the game. He has now reached base ten times during his current five-game hitting streak.

The designated hitter Kevin Taylor went 1 for 2 with two walks and now has a hit in 11 consecutive games for St. Lucie. Amed Rosario went without a hit but drove in the only run on a ground out and stole his eighth base of the year. Wuilmer Becerra had a rare off night, going 0 for 4 and saw his average drop below .400 for the first time since May 2nd.

Starter Ricky Knapp (3-2, 2.36) suffered his second loss of the year after going 5.2 innings and allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits. He walked one but had only one strikeout as well. Robert Coles walked one of the two batters he faced though he was able to strand two inherited runners. Ben Griset lowered his season ERA to 1.32 despite giving up a hit and two walks in two innings.

Asheville 4, Columbia (18-15) 1 Box Score

The first game of the series between two of the best offenses in the South Atlantic League didn’t go as expected with it being a 1-1 game to start the eighth inning. Fireflies starter Thomas McIlraith was spinning a gem before allowing three runs on two doubles (including one to Rockies top prospect Brendan Rodgers) in the top of the eighth inning.

McIlraith went 7.1 innings allowing four runs on five hits, three walks and struck out five on the way to his third loss of the season. Craig Missigman pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts but did allow the one runner he inherited to score in the eighth.

The offense was held to just one unearned run by the Tourists starter and Rockies #29 prospect David Hill in his 5.1 innings of work. Catcher Tyler Moore reached base three times (2 for 3, walk) for just the second time all season. Joe Tushcak broke out of a 4 for 26 slumped with a two hit night.

Kevin Kaczmarski went 1 for 3 with a walk, double and run scored out of the top spot in the lineup. He has now gone 4 for 10 with two walks in three games since coming off the disabled list. David Thompson was 1 for 4 while Vinny Siena went 0 for 3 with three strikeouts.

Ivan Wilson struck out in all three at bats but made a great diving catch in center field. Though he did leave the game in the eighth inning which will be something to keep an eye on.

Last night was an exciting night for the new Columbia franchise despite the loss because for the first time fans were able to watch a home game on MiLB.tv.
