While a couple of his fellow top prospects were playing in the MLB Futures Game, Brett Baty was putting on a show for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. He reached base in all five of his plate appearances on Saturday and crushed his thirteenth home run of the season.

AAA: Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (48-41) 8, Syracuse Mets (39-50)  Box Score

The first eight hitters in the Mets’ lineup had at least one hit apiece in Saturday’s game, and they were helped by two Jumbo Shrimp errors (leading to four unearned runs) and two bases-loaded walks. However, they went just 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base. Lee has already hit four home runs in July, but, although he shown great improvement following his demotion to St. Lucie, he is still striking out in over a third of his plate appearances this season. Blankenhorn is following up a red-hot June with an equally strong .310/.355/.621 July. Francisco Álvarez and Mark Vientos were both out of the lineup because they were playing in the Futures Game; each drew a walk during their time in the game.

Grey had one of the worst starts of his career as he recorded just one out – the shortest appearance of his career – and gave up hits to seven of the eight batters he faced. Orze has been either great or terrible so far in July: he has given up three earned runs twice this month but has not allowed a run in his other three appearances. Nogosek has given up just three runs with Syracuse so far this year, and this does not look like a half-season fluke. His 13.11 K/9 and 2.31 BB/9 are both career bests.

AA: Erie SeaWolves (50-35) 9, Binghamton Rumble Ponies (32-54) 7  Box Score

The Rumble Ponies fell behind 9-0 early in Saturday’s game, but they attempted a valiant comeback by scoring seven unanswered runs beginning in the sixth inning. Baty’s three-run opposite field home run was the big hit of the failed comeback. He reached base five times in the game and extended his hit streak to five games. Mauricio had multiple hits for the second straight game, which hopefully indicates that his recent slump has come to an end.

After striking out nine batters over seven innings in his last start, it looked like Chacin might be starting to adjust to the advanced competition of Double-A, but this outing, tied for his shortest of the year, shows that he is still struggling mightily. He has allowed at least four runs in six of his last seven starts. Núñez has struck out 20 batters in 13 2/3 innings pitched since his return from Tommy John surgery.

A+: Brooklyn Cyclones (40-46) 6, Greensboro Grasshoppers (36-48) 2  Box Score

The Cyclones had a solid offensive game against the Grasshoppers, as six of their eleven hits went for extra bases and they went 4-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Consuegra has been a doubles machine since he joined the Cyclones: seven of his first ten hits (he also has a home run) have been doubles and he is second in league in doubles since his promotion. Ramirez snapped a four-game hitless streak with his second multi-hit game since his promotion to Brooklyn. Ramirez has struggled during his first 10 games in High-A, but his strikeout rate remains reasonable at 23.3%.

Hamel had one of his best starts of the season as he set a new career-high with 10 strikeouts and had his first start with no earned runs that was longer than two innings. As has been the case throughout the season, walks were his only issue. Hamel has really found his groove since the start of June: in that span, he has allowed two or fewer runs in six of his eight appearances. Hall has a 15:2 K:BB ratio over 9 2/3 innings pitched since his promotion to Brooklyn.

A: Dunedin Blue Jays (37-47) vs. St. Lucie Mets (51-33)

St. Lucie’s game against the Blue Jays was suspended due to rain with the score tied 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning. The game will be completed on Sunday, July 17.

FCL: FCL Mets (17-12) 7, FCL Marlins (16-12) 3  Box Score

Home runs by Santana and Hector Rodriguez in the second inning brought home five runs, providing all the offense that the Mets would need in Saturday’s game. Blaine McIntosh has a 14:6 BB:K ratio so far this season.

Rodriguez has an 11.09 K/9 so far this season.

DSL: DSL Mets 2 (13-19) 8, DSL Mets 1 (16-15) 5  Box Score

  • Simon Juan CF: 2-for-4, RBI, 2 K, SB, .223/.328/.339

Although Juan has not hit much in his first professional season, his plate discipline has been quite advanced for his age. He has walked in 11.4% of his plate appearances while striking out just 18.9% of the time. He is also a perfect 10-for-10 in stolen base attempts.

The two Mets’ affiliates could not have been more different in their pitchers’ control in this game: the Mets 2 walked 13 batters while the Mets 1 walked just a single batter.
