MMN Recap: Binghamton Pitches Combined No-Hitter; Alvarez exits Game Early

Tuesday’s game was postponed after a Syracuse player tested positive for COVID-19. In a statement, the Syracuse Mets said members of the organization would undergo additional testing and contact tracing.

Binghamton threatened early after Cortes hit a leadoff single and advanced to third after two wild pitches. Right fielder Quinn Brodey drew a one-out walk to put runners on the corners, then Vientos struck out and Toffey lined out to end the scoring chance. A Luis Carpio single and Manny Rodriguez double put Binghamton runners on second and third with one out in the second inning, but two straight strikeouts stranded the runners. Toffey led off the fourth with a solo home run to finally put the Rumble Ponies on the board, and Vientos led off the sixth with a solo home run to give Binghamton a 2-0 lead. 

Two Binghamton pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter against Reading on Tuesday night. Walker started the game for Binghamton and did not allow a hit across six brilliant innings of work. The lefty retired the first four batter’s of the game before a Reading hitter reached on a Mark Vientos throwing error in the second inning. A double play ground ball then erased the runner. Walker issued a walk in the third, and the Reading base runner advanced to second on a wild pitch. Walker retired the final 10 batters he faced, then exited the game after bunting a foul ball off his neck.

Mitchell replaced Walker in the 7th and pitched three perfect innings to close out the Binghamton no-hitter. 

A+: Jersey Shore BlueClaws (18-24) 7 , Brooklyn Cyclones (13-27) 5 BOX SCORE

Jersey Shore pitching held Brooklyn in check through the first three innings, but the Cyclones broke through with five runs in the fourth. Mauricio led off the fourth inning with a single, and Baty followed Mauricio with a double to put runners on second and third. Alvarez doubled home Mauricio and Baty, then he came around to score on a Joe Genord single. Adrian Hernandez singled with the bases to score two more Brooklyn runs.

After the inning, Juan Uriarte replaced Alvarez, who was removed from the game as a precaution after being hit by a foul ball.

LT Struble drew a one-out walk in the ninth, bringing the tying run to the plate, but Brooklyn failed to score and tie the game.

Vilera got the start and issued a leadoff walk after a rain delay. Alvarez then threw out the base runner attempting to steal second base. Jersey Shore third baseman D.J. Stewart hit a solo home run off Vilera in the second inning. The Brooklyn starter struggled in the third, allowing a leadoff walk, a single and a three-run home run to the first three batters in the inning. After issuing a one-out walk, Vilera gave up three straight singles and a sacrifice fly to give Jersey Shore a 7-0 lead. V

ilera exited with two outs in the third, then Morris, Otanez and Winans combined to pitch 6 ⅓ scoreless innings.

Tuesday night’s game in St. Lucie was postponed due to rain. St. Lucie and Dunedin will make up the game in a double header on Wednesday starting at 12 p.m.
