AAA: Buffalo Bisons (44-25) 3, Syracuse Mets (23-48) 2  Box Score

The Mets struggled offensively on Sunday as Jackson’s two-run double would be the totality of their run production for the day.  Albert Almora Jr. left the game in the fourth inning after two at-bats, although it is unclear if this was due to injury. Lee continues to get on base at a prolific rate and his .442 on-base percentage would rank fourth in Triple-A if he had enough plate appearances to qualify.

After a rough outing last week limited him to just 1.2 innings pitched, Carrasco got his rehab back on track with three dominant innings for Syracuse. He threw 38 pitches (32 strikes) and topped out at 96 MPH in this start. Reyes piggybacked Carrasco and was effectively wild over four hitless innings, preserving the lead into the eighth inning. Ramirez, the newest member of the Mets minor leagues after being claimed from St. Louis last Wednesday, struggled in his first appearance with the team.

AA: Erie SeaWolves (40-32) 9, Binghamton Rumble Ponies (27-42) 6  Box Score

It was a power surge for the Rumble Ponies on Sunday with six of the team’s 10 hits going for extra bases, including four home runs (one each by Lagrange, Rodriguez, Nick Conti, and Carlos Rincon). Unfortunately, all but one of those home runs came with the bases empty and, thus, only produced six runs. Brett Baty had the afternoon off after his huge night on Saturday, but Vientos still received the start in left field, the eighth time he has started in the outfield in recent weeks.

Rodriguez’s home run was his sixth of the season, double his career total (3) entering the season. After a terrible start to the season, he has heated up in July and is hitting .311/.364/.508 for the month. Lagrange homered for the second straight game and is also red-hot for the month of July: .324/.351/.592 with five home runs.

De La Cruz’s nightmarish season continued with Sunday’s seven-run outing. After a string of four starts in which he gave up two runs or less, he has given up 14 runs in 15.0 innings pitched over his last three starts. Campos had a rough outing in what has otherwise been a solid year; it was only the second time this season that he did not strike out a batter in an appearance.

A+: Brooklyn Cyclones (28-42) 5, Wilmington Blue Rocks (29-43) 4  Box Score

The Cyclones jumped to a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning of Sunday’s game, but the bats were then held silent until a walk-off single off the bat of Luis Gonzalez in the 9th inning. It was his third hit of the game. Alvarez has had some growing pains in July, hitting just .119/.246/.288 with a 36.2% strikeout rate for the month, but has shown some signs of coming alive recently. He has three extra base hits in his last five games, including two home runs.

Mauricio has following his hot streak with a 1-for-12 three-game stretch, but is still hitting .282/.320/.451 for the month. Most notably, he has cut his strikeout rate down to 15.6% during July. Duplantis was just a home run short of the cycle.

Rennie was making his first start with Brooklyn after struggling to a 9.91 ERA in 11 starts with Brooklyn. He needed 82 pitches to get through four innings, but did preserve the lead for the Cyclones. Cavallaro has missed much of this season with injury, but after rehabbing in St. Lucie (both the Complex League and Low-A), he made his first appearance with Brooklyn on Sunday. He was solid in 2019 in both relief and starting, so it will be interesting to see into which role he ultimately settles. Taveras’ made his third appearance since his promotion from St. Lucie and has struck out 7 batters while only walking one in 5 innings at the level.

A: St. Lucie Mets (39-33) 15, Bradenton Marauders (43-28) 0  Box Score

The Mets’ offense was helped a bit by four Bradenton errors, but the lineup took advantage of the opportunities by going 6-for-13 with runners in scoring position. After three first inning runs, the bats were mostly silent until the seventh inning. In the final two innings, the Mets scored 12 runs, capped off by Murphy’s eighth inning grand slam. Palmer extended his hitting streak to eight games and is now hitting .351/.407/.519 for July. His .357 average over the last 30 days leads the Low-A Southeast league.

Chacin, a former Dodgers prospect signed by the Mets in early June, was dominant in his first start with St. Lucie. He needed just 67 pitches to make it through six scoreless innings. Tavarez continues to pitch to his profile as a hard-thrower who is also extremely wild. In 17.2 innings pitched this season, Tavarez has walked 25 batters, while striking out 30. The ERA is not pretty but a 15 K/9 is still fairly enticing. Montas, just twenty years old, continues to be incredibly stingy in terms of giving up runs: he has allowed just two earned runs in 24.2 innings pitched, even though he does not strike out a ton of batters (22 strikeouts).
