Scranton/Wilkes-Barere (15-12) 14, Syracuse (17-13) 3  Box Score

The Mets offense had nine hits in the game, but were limited to just three runs and struck out a ridiculous 18 times in the game. Gomez has been on a hot streak over the last couple of weeks as he’s homered in back-to-back games and has hit .333 over his last 10 games. Lowrie played the first four innings of his second game rehab game with Syracuse at shortstop before shifting to second base. Guillorme has an eight game hitting streak and has put up a fairly characteristic line for him (high OBP, low ISO) so far in Syracuse.

After tossing seven shutout innings with Binghamton in his first start of the season, Jannis’ first Triple-A start could not have gone much worse. A passed ball and an error early in the game didn’t help, but he also gave up three home runs and an average of four base runners per inning. Conlon was making his first Triple-A appearance of the season and it appears as though he will be used out of the bullpen for the time being.

Portland (9-17) 4, Binghamton (15-10) 2  Box Score

The Rumble Ponies were held to just two runs on five hits in the first game of their Sunday doubleheader. Haggerty got Binghamton on the board with a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Barnes drove in Haggerty with a single in the sixth inning to bring home the team’s second and final run. That hit extended his hitting streak to nine games and he is 14-for-32 over that span.

Gibbons was cruising early in his start as he threw five scoreless innings before running into trouble in the sixth inning. After giving up four runs and the lead, Gibbons was relieved by Uceta, who recorded the final two outs of the inning. Despite the rough last inning, Gibbons has been fantastic to start 2019 and this was the first time that he had given up more than two earned runs in a start. He also has a 37:11 K:BB ratio in 32.1 innings pitched. Uceta has also had a solid rebound year so far after a rough 2018.

Binghamton (16-10) 6, Portland (9-18) 5  Box Score

Binghamton’s offense had a strong game, scoring six runs in seven innings during the second half of their doubleheader. They jumped on the board early with two runs in the first inning on a Patrick Mazeika groundout and a Toffey double. Trailing in the sixth inning, a Kaczmarski grand slam would put the Rumble Ponies permanently in front. Toffey has now reached base in 16 straight games.

McGeorge, who was making the spot start because of the doubleheader, and Roseboom both made there first outings of the season after dealing with injury. McGeorge was solid last year with St. Lucie, but struggled upon promotion to St. Lucie. Roseboom struggled with control in this outing, but still managed to hold Portland to one run.

St. Lucie (16-12) vs. Dunedin (17-11)

St. Lucie’s game on Sunday in Dunedin was postponed due to rain. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader the next time to two teams meet on May 20.

Lexington (14-14) 11, Columbia (8-20) 1  Box Score

Columbia’s offense continues to struggle mightily early in 2019, as they put up just a single run on five hits in the continuation of Saturday’s suspended game. The team has been averaging a league-worst 2.86 runs per game so this season. After his incredibly hot start to the season, Mauricio has cooled off a bit and is now just 4-for-28 over his last seven games. Despite the team’s offensive woes, it is important to keep in mind that the Fireflies’ offense is filled with very young players who are likely still adjusting to the new level.

After a string of very successful relief outings, Hutchinson was given the opportunity to make his first career full-season start. Unfortunately, he struggled a bit with command and his night was ultimately cut short due to rain, but it is great to see him healthy and fulfilling his potential after spending the past two season in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League. James, who was scheduled to start on Sunday anyway, picked up where Hutchinson left off when the game resumed, but struggled over his 4.2 innings. This season has certainly been a mixed bag for James, who has given up a lot of both earned and unearned runs, but has also seen a greater than 50% increase in K/9  from 6.0 to 9.3.

Columbia (9-20) 3, Lexington (14-15) 1  Box Score

It was another game without too much happening for the Fireflies offense. They had just three hits, with the big blow coming on Sharp’s home run in the fifth inning. Sharp strikes out a ton, but he does have some intriguing power and can also play third base.

It is fantastic news to see Holderman back on the mound after missing the majority of 2017 with shoulder issues and all of 2018 after having Tommy John surgery. The 6’7″ righty needed just 53 pitches to cruise through 5 innings in his first start back. He was considered to be fairly promising at one point, so hopefully he can stay healthy and regain the stuff that he once had.
