MMN Recap: Columbia Sweeps Rome, St. Lucie Gets 5th Win

Sacramento 6, Las Vegas (2-3) 1

The Las Vegas 51s bats were asleep last night picking up just seven hits and leaving 11 men on base. Brandon Nimmo was moved up to the leadoff spot but went 0 for 5 with two strikeouts. T.J. Rivera was 2 for 4 with a RBI while playing second base. The only other 51s player with two hits? Yup, you guess it right, reliever Chase Huchingson went 2 for 2 after having only one pro at bat before last night.

Stolmy Pimentel got the start and struggled, he gave up three runs on 10 baserunners in 2.2 innings. Lefty Dario Alvarez has struggled to start the year (13.50 ERA) before he finally pitching a scoreless inning in the last night’s loss.

Dilson Herrera continues to sit in games when the designated hitter isn’t available and Gavin Cecchini got his first night off this year. Matt Reynolds went 0 for 4 while playing shortstop. He has now played three games at third, one at second and one at short. Box Score

Binghamton 5 (2-2), Harrisburg 1

Dominic Smith had his best Double-A game to this point, going 2 for 3 with a double and a walk. Kyle Johnson was the vocal point of the B-Mets offense last night out of the leadoff spot scoring two runs, knocking in one and hitting his second double of the season. Outfielder Maikis De La Cruz continued the good start to his B-Mets career in a 1 for 2 night with two walks, run scored and a RBI. He has now reached base seven times in his first three games of the year.

L.J. Mazzilli, Derrik Gibson, Niuman Romero and Xorge Carrillo each had one hit on the night. Jeff McNeil was given the night off and Matt Oberste walked and scored a run as a pinch hitter.

Rainy Lara tossed five scoreless innings in his first start of the season, he allowed seven hits and struck out three compared to one walk. Lefty Kelly Secrest pitched 1.2 shutdown innings of relief with two strikeouts and stretched the homerless streak against him in 85 innings (his entire minor league career). St. Lucie (5-2) 7, Dunedin 2

St. Lucie got their 5th win of the season despite being outhit 7-6 by the Blue Jays whose pitching staff walked eight batters including five in the first inning when the Mets scored all of their runs. The Mets staff didn’t walk a batter and has only issued 16 all season in 63 innings of work.

Michael Katz paced the offense in his 2 for 4 night, he knocked in one run and scored another. Luis Guillorme had a good all-around game, reaching base two times, knocking in two runs, laying down a sac bunt, and making a couple of great plays at second.  Shortstop Amed Rosario has now hit safely in six of seven games this season after going 1 for 4 last night.

Speedy outfielder Champ Stuart walked twice in the first inning but went hitless with two strikeouts the rest of the way. John Mora had his hitting streak halted at six games, he did walk twice and score a run though. Wuilmer Becerra was out of the starting lineup again, his only appearance since April 9th was when he pinch ran on the 11th. His replacement, Patrick Biondi, hasn’t hit (.125) but continues to get high praise for his excellent defense.

Josh Prevost made his second start of the season and picked up the win after tossing 5.1 innings of two-run ball. He struck out five and did not walk a batter. Josh Edgin came into the game in the 6th inning with two runners on and one out. The first batter singled up the middle to score a run before he retired the next two batters (pop up, ground out). He threw just five pitches with four of them coming for strikes. Box Score

Columbia (4-3) 3, Rome 2

The Columbia Fireflies finished off a three game sweep of the Braves behind yet again another solid starting pitching performance from Chase Ingram. He went 6 innings giving up two runs on seven hits and struck out eight without issuing a walk. He picked up his first win of the year and has now struck out 15 batters in his first 10 South Atlantic League innings.

Righty reliever Craig Missigman pitched a perfect 7th inning with two strikeouts in his second outing of the 2016 season. He was followed by Alex Palsha who struck out four in his two innings of relief. He also picked up his first save of the season after having 13 of them in 2015 for the Brooklyn Cyclones.

The Fireflies offense could muster only five hits even though three of them came with runners in scoring position. David Thompson has been awesome to begin his Columbia career, he extended his hitting streak to seven games last night. He went 1 for 3 with a double, walk. run scored and a RBI. His eight RBI rank him second in the league and his 1.116 OPS is good for sixth.

Second basemen Vinny Siena was o for 2 on the day, he did walk twice however giving him a league high seven on the season. Dash Winningham went 1 for 4 with a run scored and his first run batted in of the season. Joe Tuschak knocked in the winning run in the 7th inning with a single, his second straight game with the game winner. Box Score

Tonight is the first ever game at the brand new Spirit Communications Park, P.J. Conlon will be on the mound for the Fireflies as they take on the Greenville Drive at 7:05 PM ET.
