Gwinnett (41-33) 5, Syracuse (36-39) 1  Box Score

The Mets offense struggled greatly in Sunday’s game as they were able muster just one run on four hits. Taijeron provided all the offense in the game with his second inning solo home run. With that home run off of a lefty, Taijeron is now hitting .280/.417/.700 against left-handed pitching this season.

After spending a couple of months in the major league bullpen, Gagnon struggled a bit in his return to the Syracuse starting rotation. He did not strikeout any batters in four innings pitched, with the big blow against him coming on a two run first innings home run. Zamora had gone seven straight appearances without allowing a run prior to this poor outing.

Richmond (27-45) 4, Binghamton (36-32) 3  Box Score

The Rumble Ponies were able to push across three runs on seven hits in Sunday’s loss. Thompson is thriving back in Binghamton after struggling with a .596 OPS in Syracuse. Sanchez extended his hitting streak to 13 games and is now hitting .375/.412/.479 for the month of June. At just 22 years old, Sanchez is one of the youngest catchers in Double-A and his solid performance at the level, combined with his excellent defense, makes him a fairly interesting prospect.

Peterson did not allow a hit until the fourth inning in what was his second straight very good start. This season has been very mixed for Peterson, but he continues to keep his strikeout rate very high, with 73 strikeouts in 65.1 innings pitched, which is very impressive for a pitcher in the upper minors who doesn’t throw particularly hard. Blackham has struck out 47 batters in just 30.0 innings pitched.

St. Lucie (38-35) 7, Florida (27-46) 2  Box Score

The Mets offense had a strong game as they were able to push across seven runs on ten hits. Cortes got the Mets on the board early with a RBI single in the first inning. His plate discipline numbers have been incredible in June, with him having just 6 strikeouts in comparison to 12 walks. Zanon continued what has become a solid June and now has a .278/.345/.472 line for the month.

  • RHP Dedniel Nunez (W, 1-2, 4.12 ERA) 6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, BB, 9 K
  • RHP Conner O’Neil (2-1, 5.34 ERA) 1.0 IP, H
  • RHP Ezequiel Zabaleta (1-0, 1.80 ERA) 1.0 IP, 2 K

Nunez had one of his best starts of the season, tying a season-high with six innings pitched and coming one short of his season high with nine strikeouts. His run prevention numbers aren’t great, but Nunez’s 82:16 K:BB is very impressive and is part of the reason why he has emerged a legitimate prospect this season. Zabaleta has not allowed a run in seven appearances (12.1 innings pitched).

Columbia (26-44) 11, Asheville (31-43) 9  Box Score

With a barrage of 18 hits, the Fireflies were able to put up 11 runs and take the victory in this high scoring game, Seven batters in the lineup, including the first five batters, had multi-hit games. Senger had the biggest game of his career with three extra base hits, including his third home run of the season. While the first two months of the season were not kind to Senger, he has performed much better in June and is hitting .290/.333/.645 for the month. Vientos made his 17th error of the season, but has been hitting better over the past four games.

Szapucki tied his season high with 45 pitches and went three innings for the first time since June 4, 2017. Overall, Szapucki has been performing successfully in his return from Tommy John surgery and he has now made four straight starts without a setback. Megill had only allowed one earned run this season prior to Sunday’s appearance.

Staten Island (5-4) 11, Brooklyn (4-5) 1  Box Score

The Cyclones offense was stymied throughout Sunday’s game as the team was limited to just four hits. The lone run wouldn’t come until the bottom of the 9th inning, when the Cyclones were already down 11-0, on the strength of a solo home run by Rheams. Cecchini was making his first rehab appearance after being injured for the entirety of the first half of the season.

There isn’t much good to say about Brooklyn’s pitching in this game. Bryant has very strong K:BB ratio early in the season (13:2 in 8.0 innings), but continues to give up a large number of runs. The outfielder Jose Medina was called on to pitch the ninth inning and ended up striking out two of the three batters he faced.

Elizabethton (3-3) 12, Kingsport (4-2) 6  Box Score

  • Gregory Guerrero 2B: 1-for-2, R, 2 BB, .381/.500/.810
  • Wilfred Astudillo 1B: 1-for-2, R, HR, 2 RBI< K, .300/.300/.600
  • Cristopher Pujols 1B: 3-for-5, R, RBI, 2 K, .333/.429/.333

The Mets scattered eleven hits in this game and, thanks to an impressive 5-for-12 performance with runners in scoring position, were able to push across six runs. Guerrero continues to improve upon his outstanding start to the season and now has walked more than he has struck out through the first six games.

Otanez could not replicate the success of his first start of the season in this outing and left the game after the third inning. Senger has been incredibly wild in his first two professional appearances: he has walked eight of the nine batters he has faced and threw just 8 out of 25 pitches for strikes in this game.
