Lehigh Valley IronPigs (24-19) 6, Syracuse Mets (24-21) 5 Box Score

Syracuse starter Chris Flexen turned in a strong outing, allowing only one run in 5.2 innings of work. In the third inning, Flexen walked in a run with the bases loaded. With two runners on base in the sixth inning, Corey Taylor came on in relief and induced a groundout to end the inning. Taylor stayed in the game for the seventh inning and surrendered a run to cut the Syracuse lead to three runs.

Stephen Villines had not given up an earned run entering the game on Thursday. The reliever appeared in the eighth inning and quickly got the first two outs of the inning. He then allowed a single and a run-scoring triple to trim the Syracuse lead to 5-3. Arquimedes Caminero entered in the bottom of the ninth inning for the save opportunity, but the flame-throwing reliever struggled to close out the game. With one out, Tejada botched a potential game-ending double play to load the bases. Caminero surrendered four runs to give Lehigh Valley the walk-off win.

Center fielder Braxton Lee and second baseman Ruben Tejada, new promotions to Triple-A Syracuse, slid into the top of the lineup for the Mets. The two additions immediately contributed to the Syracuse offense. Tejada scored in the first inning on a line drive single by catcher Rene Rivera.

Lee led off the top of the fifth inning with a double, and Tejada followed with a single to put runners on first and third. Rivera singled to drive Lee and Tejada home, and left fielder Dilson Herrera slugged a two-run home run to give Syracuse a 5-1 lead.

Lakeland Flying Tigers (20-26) 4, St. Lucie Mets (23-23) 3 (F/10) Box Score

St. Lucie ace Tony Dibrell took the mound for the Mets and turned in another strong outing. Dibrell held Lakeland scoreless through the first four innings but ran into trouble in the fifth inning. Dibrell issued a pair of walks to lead off the fifth inning, and a pair of hits drove home the first run for Lakeland. Dibrell induced a one-out ground ball with the bases loaded, but a run scored on an unconventional 4-6-5-2-5-3 double play.

Thomas McIlraith allowed a leadoff triple and a run-scoring single to give Lakeland a 3-2 lead in the eighth inning. In the tenth inning, with a runner placed on second base, Blake Taylor allowed a leadoff single to give the Flying Tigers a 4-3 lead.

The St. Lucie offense struck first when the top of the order came up to lead off the bottom of the third inning. Consecutive singles from third baseman Blake Tiberi, designated hitter Carlos Cortes and first baseman Jeremy Vasquez gave the Mets a 1-0 lead at home. After center fielder Quinn Brodey popped out to third base, right fielder Jacob Zanon drove in a second run on a sacrifice fly to center field. Second baseman Manny Rodriguez grounded out to end the St. Lucie scoring threat in the third inning.

Brodey launched a double to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning. After a pair of groundouts, a wild pitch brought Brodey home to tie the game at 3. In the tenth inning, the Mets trailed 4-3 but went down in order to end the game.

Greenville Drive (19-27) 4, Columbia Fireflies (18-29) 1 Box Score

  • RHP Jose Butto (0-6, 5.36 ERA): 4 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
  • LHP Jake Simon (0-0, 0.00 ERA): 2 IP, 3 K

Starting pitcher Jose Butto struggled early in the matchup against Greenville. In the top of the second, he allowed three straight batters to reach base, tying the game at 1. He then surrendered a second run on a sacrifice bunt. In the third inning Butto allowed a leadoff single, but the baserunner was caught stealing by catcher Hayden Senger. With two outs in the inning, Butto surrendered a solo home run to give Greenville a 3-1 lead. Simon was making his 2019 debut.

The Columbia bullpen combined to allow only one run over five innings of work. Jake Simon and Darwin Ramos turned in scoreless outings in the loss.

The Columbia offense struck first and then fell silent in their matchup against Greenville. Shortstop and top prospect Ronny Mauricio launched a leadoff double to left field in the bottom of the first inning, and he stole third base after center fielder Hansel Moreno struck out. Third baseman Mark Vientos drove Mauricio home on a sacrifice fly to center field.

After Columbia collected two hits in the first inning, the Fireflies scattered their next five hits over the remaining eight innings. In the fourth inning, Columbia had runners on first and third with one out, but a pair of strikeouts ended the scoring chance. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Senger stepped up to the plate as the tying run. He struck out to end the game.
