Joe Genord (Jacob Resnick/Mets Minors)

Buffalo (42-38) 9, Syracuse (39-42) 3   Box Score

The Mets recorded only five hits in their loss, with Rivera driving in two of their three runs. Blanco also homered in the eighth after coming on as a pinch-runner in the sixth, raising his OPS in June to .926. It was a much-needed good game for Rivera, who’s been slumping badly in June after a hot May.

  • LHP Anthony Kay (L, 0-3, 9.64 ERA): 5.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 4 K
  • RHP Ryley Gilliam (1-0, 15.63 ERA): 0.2 IP, H, 3 R, 2 BB, K
  • RHP Casey Coleman (1-7, 5.57 ERA): 1.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 0 K
  • RHP Jacob Rhame (1-1, 7.59 ERA): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, K

Kay’s four starts since his promotion to Syracuse haven’t gone great, although the last two have been a little more respectable, including Saturday’s outing when he went five innings for the first time as a Syracuse Met. Gilliam has struggled to adjust to the Triple-A level, as he got roughed up again to raise his ERA to an ugly 15.63. Command has been an issue for Gilliam, who has started to walk more batters while also giving up a lot of hits, a bad combination. Coleman made his third relief outing of the year, and it did not go as well as his first two. Rhame has struggled, but pitched a solid one-two-three eighth inning.

Binghamton (40-46) 2, Altoona (40-37) 1 (F/7)   Box Score

Barnes put the Rumble Ponies up early with an RBI double, a lead they would never relinquish in the first game of the doubleheader. Cecchini hit an RBI single in his third game with Binghamton; he is 2-11 there since finishing his brief rehab stint with Brooklyn.

  • RHP Mickey Jannis (W, 4-1, 2.68 ERA): 6.0 IP, 3 H, R, 2 BB, 4 K
  • RHP Stephen Villines (0-0, 0.00 ERA): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

It was another solid start from Jannis at the Double-A level, who seems to be comfortable pitching at this level but is yet to solve Triple-A. The knuckleballer hit a brief rough patch from late May to early June, but has responded by giving up two runs in his last two outings. Villines is another guy who’s excelled in Double-A this year, as he has now gone 19.1 innings without allowing an earned run. He’s looking to make his way back to Triple-A to prove he can be effective there as well.

Altoona (41-37) 4, Binghamton (40-37) 3 (F/9)   Box Score

  • Barrett Barnes LF: 1-3, 2B, RBI, BB, K, .251/.381/.456
  • Patrick Mazeika 1B: 1-3, 2B, BB, K, .254/.322/.424
  • Andres Gimenez SS: 2-2, RBI, BB, .228/.302/.341

The Rumble Ponies went to extras in the second game of the doubleheader, with each team scoring once in the eighth to send the game to the ninth, where the Curve walked it off. Barnes contributed early, putting the Ponies on top 1-0 in the first with an RBI double. Gimenez didn’t come in until the fourth inning, but reached base four times and drove in a run with a single in the loss. It was a much-needed game for the top prospect, who owns just a .545 OPS in June.

Clearwater (45-33) 8, St. Lucie (40-38) 2   Box Score

The Mets’ only runs came on singles by Cortes and Vasquez in the fifth. Vasquez has been swinging a good bat lately, as he extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

Nunez was not at his best, tying a season high by issuing four walks and striking out a season-low two. McIlraith threw three scoreless innings to rebound from straight shaky outings. O’Neil gave up the first runs he’s allowed this month, although he’s still struggled overall, while the inconsistent Hernandez pitched a perfect ninth.

Hickory (49-27) 4, Columbia (29-47) 0   Box Score

Vientos is slowly starting to heat up again, batting .333 over his last nine games, although he’s yet to really break out and go on an extended hot streak yet. Newton’s struggles are becoming a little bit worrisome, but there still is time for the 20-year-old to recover. The Fireflies couldn’t get anything going offensively on Saturday, as they were shut out by the Crawdads.

It was another good outing for Woods Richardson, who owns a 2.38 ERA in June after getting hit around a bit in April. The 18-year-old continues to do a good job of striking guys out and limiting walks, and has pitched much better than his record and ERA suggest. Tripp has had three good outings now, along with two very bad ones. Hutchinson, who has been pretty steady but has struggled a little more in June, provided four useful innings of long relief for the Fireflies.

Brooklyn (10-4) 8, Lowell (9-5) 7   Box Score

The Cyclones were fueled by a six-run sixth inning, capped by an RBI triple by 7th-round pick Ritter. Genord also continued to impress early on with his third homer in 12 games.

  • RHP Garrison Bryant (1-1, 6.92 ERA): 5.0 IP, 7 H, 6 R, BB, 7 K
  • RHP Corey Gaconi (W, 1-0, 3.00 ERA): 3.0 IP, 2 H, R, 0 BB, K
  • RHP Luis Silva (1-0, 3.68 ERA): 1.0 IP, H, 0 R, 0 BB, K

Bryant has had one great outing, one okay outing, and now one bad outing, although he does hold a very impressive strikeout-to-walk ratio of 20-3. Gaconi pitched three solid innings in his professional debut and earned the win, while Silva posted his third straight scoreless outing.

The second game of the Brooklyn doubleheader was postponed to July 30.

Johnson City (6-4) 9, Kingsport (6-5) 4   Box Score

The Mets had a 4-0 in the third from a pair of two-run homers by Kleszcz and Palmer. For Kleszcz, it was his first professional home run as part of a three-hit game for the 33rd-rounder. However, the team went an astounding 0-16 with runners in scoring position and didn’t score any more runs.

  • RHP Michel Otanez (1-1, 5.73 ERA): 3.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 5 K
  • RHP Brendan Hardy (0-0, 3.60 ERA): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, 2 K
  • RHP Yadiel Flores (L, 0-1, 5.87 ERA): 3.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 4 K

Otanez started off strong with two scoreless innings, but gave up two runs in the third and couldn’t get through the fourth. Flores gave up the lead in a three-run sixth, resulting in a loss.

DSL Mets1 (14-8) 8, DSL Angels (8-14) 7   Box Score

Castillo and Jan Cabrera each reached base three times in the win. Federico Polanco had the biggest hit for the Mets, a three-run triple in the fourth to put them up 4-2. Polanco also drew a bases-loaded walk to put them up 6-5 in the eighth.

Despite seven walks, Moreno has only allowed one earned run in 12.1 innings this year. Castellanos pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth innings as they held on to win 8-7.

DSL Cardinals Red (9-16) 7, DSL Mets2 (12-13) 6   Box Score

Corona had a big day, with a triple, double, and a walk, as one of five Mets batters who recorded multiple hits. Wilker Velasquez recorded his third straight multi-hit game with three singles.

  • RHP Edinson Diaz (0-0, 2.53 ERA): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, K
  • RHP Edward Sosa (0-2, 4.05 ERA): 2.0 IP, H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
  • LHP Daniel Juarez (0-0, 0.00 ERA): 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K

Juarez, after two professional games, has started his career with three hitless innings and five strikeouts. Eiker Huizi gave up three in the bottom the ninth, walking four as the Cardinals Red walked it off.
