AAA: Buffalo Bisons (56-36) 9, Syracuse Mets (37-56) 2  Box Score

Syracuse did not have much offense to speak of in Sunday’s game, but the team’s two biggest hits came from two players who may help out the major league team down the stretch. Martinez, playing in his second rehab game with Syracuse (ninth rehab game overall), got the Mets on the board with his fourth inning solo home run. It was his first extra base hit of his rehab stint. Almora Jr. would drive in the Mets’ second run of the game with his sixth inning solo home run. Former Met Jacob Barnes closed out the lopsided game with a scoreless ninth inning.

Reyes snapped a four-game stretch of allowing no more than one run with a rough start on Sunday. Vizcaino had not pitched since May 26, but struck out the side on 13 pitches in his first appearance off the injured list. If fully healthy, a strong performance over the final month of the minor league season may earn him a spot on the major league team’s September roster, so a dominant return to action is promising. Orze has struggled in his first several appearances at Triple-A, but it is remarkable that he has reached such a high level within a year of being drafted.

AA: Binghamton Rumble Ponies (43-50) vs. Portland Sea Dogs (55-38)

Binghamton’s game against the Sea Dogs was suspended due to rain with the score tied 3-3 in the top of the fourth inning. Before the game was called for the day, Brett Baty and Mark Vientos were both hitless in two at bats, while Carlos Cortes and Jake Mangum recorded two hits apiece. Oscar De La Cruz struck out five and gave up three runs over the first three innings. The game will be resumed on September 7.

A+: Brooklyn Cyclones (35-58) vs. Hudson Valley Renegades (60-35)

The Cyclones game against the Renegades was postponed due to the expected rain and wind from Hurricane Henri. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on September 8.

A: Tampa Tarpons (64-29) 8, St. Lucie Mets (49-44) 2  Box Score

It was an abysmal afternoon for the Mets’ offense, as the lineup produced a total of two hits and were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Both hits came off the bats of recent 2021 draft picks: Kendall and Jordan, who have both gotten off to strong starts in Low-A. Despite the hitless afternoon Ramirez is still hitting a productive .259/.310/.481 for the month of August. With four walks in Sunday’s game, Cesar Berbesi has walked in over 25% of his plate appearances this season.

After making one appearance each in the Florida Complex League, recent draftees Kubichek and McLoughlin moved to the higher competition of Low-A. Both struggled in this game, but this is a higher level of competition than Mets draft picks had faced in their first seasons in the past (due to the elimination of the Short Season-A league), so growing pains are perhaps to be expected.

Tavarez has been a pitcher of extremes in his debut professional season: he has a 14.87 K/9 and 10.96 BB/9 while not allowing a single home run until Sunday’s appearance. The results have not been there for him, but his stuff is still electric enough to keep an eye on.
