MMN Recap: Kay Strong for Binghamton in Blowout Win

Lehigh Valley IronPigs (17-9) 4, Syracuse Mets (17-10) 2 Box Score

Santiago took the hill for Syracuse and turned in five solid innings of work against Lehigh Valley. Santiago allowed a leadoff double and a walk to put the first two batters of the game on base. He then retired three straight batters to retire the side. Santiago tossed a perfect second inning before running into trouble in the third. He struck out the first two batters of the third inning, but a pair of walks and a single allowed the IronPigs to get their first run on the board. He surrendered a solo home run in the fourth inning to tie the game at 2.

Rhame came on in relief of Santiago in the sixth inning. He struck out the first batter he faced, but then allowed a single and a two-run home run to give Lehigh Valley a 4-2 lead. Eric Hanhold and Tyler Bashlor each pitched scoreless innings in the loss.

The Syracuse offense sputtered on Thursday night. The lineup combined for 5 hits while striking out 11 times. Left fielder Tim Tebow went 0-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts, dropping his OPS to .397 for the season.

Syracuse loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third inning. A fielding error allowed one run to score, and a Rymer Liriano sacrifice fly scored Herrera. Syracuse was held scoreless for the remainder of the night.

 Binghamton Rumble Ponies (13-8) 10, Portland Sea Dogs (7-15) 1 Box Score

Stony Brook native Anthony Kay posted another strong outing for Binghamton to drop his ERA to 1.52 on the season. He has allowed a total of one earned run in 16.2 innings over his last three starts. Kay struggled with his command, walking three batters.

Adonis Uceta came on in relief of Kay in the sixth inning, and he surrendered a double and a single to give Portland their lone run of the contest. Villines closed out the game with 1.2 scoreless innings, and he has yet to allow a run in 10.1 innings this season.

The Binghamton offense torched the Portland pitching staff for 10 runs on 9 hits and 9 walks. In the second inning, Dario Pizzano walked, and Braxton Lee singled to put two runners on base for Kaczmarski’s three-run home run. In the fourth inning, Will Toffey singled and Pizzano doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. Lee drove both runners home with a single. Binghamton tacked on one run in the eighth inning and four runs in the ninth inning.

The Thursday matchup between the St. Lucie Mets and the Palm Beach Cardinals was cancelled due to inclement weather. The game will not be made up.

Delmarva Shorebirds (20-4) 1, Columbia Fireflies (8-18) 0

Butto got the start for Columbia and scattered four hits across 5.2 innings of work to keep Delmarva off the scoreboard. He got the first two outs of the sixth inning, but then allowed a single and a walk to put a pair of runners on base. Oxford came on in relief and induced a lineout to end the inning. Oxford came back out for the seventh inning, and he allowed a solo home run to give Delmarva a 1-0 lead. Viall tossed two scoreless innings to close out the game.

Columbia created a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the first inning. After leadoff batter Ronny Mauricio struck out, first baseman Brian Sharp singled. Designated Hitter Chase Chambers hit a 2-out single to advance Sharp to third base. With two runners on, catcher Hayden Senger  grounded out to end the inning.

The Columbia offense flatlined for the rest of the night on Thursday. Top prospects Mauricio and Newton were held hitless.
