Syracuse (30-30) 3, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (33-25) 1  Box Score

The Mets offense was limited to just three hits in Friday night’s game, but still managed to push across three runs and secure the victory. Kemp had the big hit in this game, getting the Mets on the board right away with a two run homer in the first inning. This was Kemp’s first home run since joining the Mets organization. Syracuse would never relinquish this lead, but they would add an insurance run on Guillorme’s double in the ninth inning.

Flexen pitched well for Syracuse, with this start representing only the second time this season he has allowed one run or less in a start (not including an abbreviated start which he left due to injury after three batters). It is somewhat interesting that he had such good results despite striking out a season-low four batters. He did have some defensive assistance with Tejada and Dilson Herrera turning a triple play in the fourth inning. Nogosek continues to reemerge as one of the Mets’ top reliever prospect, as he has still not allowed a run in 9.0 Triple-A innings. For the season, between Double-A and Triple-A, Nogosek has a 0.64 ERA, although his 29:15 isn’t quite as spectacular.

Hartford (35-24) 8, Binghamton (31-24) 4  Box Score

The Rumble Ponies scattered eleven hits in this game, four of which went for extra bases, but were only able to score four runs. Krizan had a big game, which featured his sixth home run of the season, and has been outstanding recently. Following a dreadful April, in which he hit just .119/.178/.143, Krizan has posted an OPS north of .900 in both May and June and has walked more than he has struck out. Carpio has performed well in his limited time in Double-A; he has seen both his plate discipline and power numbers improve following his promotion. Still just 21 years old for the next month, the fact that Carpio is 3.2 years younger than the average player in the league makes his performance even more impressive.

  • RHP Harol Gonzalez (3-1, 3.27 ERA) 6.0 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, BB, 8 K
  • RHP Joe Zanghi (L, 2-1, 1.96 ERA) 0.2 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, BB, K
  • LHP Jake Simon (0-0, 6.75 ERA) 1.1 IP, 2 H, ER, 2 BB, 3 K

Gonzalez has had an interesting start to his 2019 season. His ERA and K:BB ratio are, by far, the best they’ve been since his 2016 season with Brooklyn and he continues to go deep into games (with 83 pitches on Friday night, he likely would have gone deeper into this game had he not been pulled for a pinch hitter). However, somewhat amazingly, despite allowing only 20 earned runs all season, with three home runs allowed in this start, Gonzalez has allowed twelve home runs in just 55.0 innings pitched. This is the same number of batters he has walked unintentionally and is already three-quarters of the way to his career high of 16. Overall, it has been a promising start to the season for Gonzalez, but he has to find a way to keep the ball in the yard. Simon was making his Double-A debut after pitching solidly in four games for Columbia. It will be interesting to see if he stays with Binghamton or is sent back down to Columbia or St. Lucie following this outing.

Lakeland (27-33) 2, St. Lucie (30-30) 0  Box Score

The Mets had virtually no offense in this game as they were held to just three singles and four walks. Nimmo was playing in his second rehab game as he attempts to return from a neck injury and, once again, was the designated hitter. With a walk, Carlos Cortes extended his on-base streak to thirteen games.

Wilson had one of his best starts of the season and was extremely efficient, needing just 89 pitches to get two outs into the seventh inning. Unfortunately, his shutout was broken up with a two run home run in the seventh, but this is still definitely a start on which to build. One of Wilson’s biggest issues this season has been an inability to consistently miss bats, as evidence by his drop in strikeouts from last season (59 in 2018 compared to 34 in 2019, both in 53.2 innings pitched).

Columbia (23-36) vs. Hickory (38-22)

The Fireflies’ game against the Crawdads was postponed due to rain. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on June 8.

DSL Phillies White (5-1) 3, DSL Mets2 (4-2) 2  Box Score

There wasn’t much offense in this game for the Mets, with the lineup combining for only six hits and fourteen total strike outs. Both runs scored on wild pitches.

Diaz has not struck out a single batter in either of his first two starts of the season (9.2 innings pitched). Villalba has pitched 7.0 scoreless innings to start his season.
