AAA: Worcester Red Sox (46-40) 5, Syracuse Mets (35-50) 3  Box Score

The Mets had ten hits in Sunday’s game but could push across just three runs due to a poor 1-for-8 performance with runners in scoring position. Vientos hit his first triple of the season and just the third of his professional career in the sixth inning. He has recorded at least one hit in seven of the eight games he has played in July. This was the first time the Ritter has played shortstop in his professional career.

After two rocky starts following his demotion to Triple-A, Megill got back on track with this start. Most importantly, after struggling with walks all season, he did not walk anybody in his six innings of work. Reid-Foley had only allowed one run total in his seven rehab appearances prior to this outing, but struggled mightily on Sunday. Hernández did not help matters with his wildness: he threw just five of his thirteen pitches for strikes and walked in a crucial insurance run for the Red Sox.

AA: Portland Sea Dogs (50-31) 2, Binghamton Rumble Ponies (38-42) 1  Box Score

The Rumble Ponies had very little life on offense in this game, recording just six total hits and striking out thirteen times. Two-thirds of those hits came from Peroza and McIlwain. Peroza had just one hit in July prior to this game, so hopefully the multi-hit game will get him back on track. McIlwain has been heating up recently: he has three straight multi-hit games and is hitting .360/.467/.440 in July.

After posting a 1.37 ERA in his first three starts in Double-A, Scott has regressed a bit in his last two starts: he has a 7.45 ERA and has given up three home runs in his two July starts. Núñez has a 17:2 K:BB ratio in 12.0 innings pitched since his demotion to Double-A.

A+: Brooklyn Cyclones (39-41) 7, Wilmington Blue Rocks (34-45) 2  Box Score

The Cyclones were flummoxed by Wilmington’s pitching staff for the first seven innings of Sunday’s game, but they came alive in a big way in the eighth and ninth inning. After scoring just one run prior to the eighth, the Cyclones jumped ahead with four runs in that inning and added two more runs in the ninth inning. Everyone in the lineup except for the Cyclones’ two top prospects, Parada and Alex Ramirez, had at least one hit in this game. Ramirez has been struggling mightily recently: he is hitting .182/.263/.242 in July and was below the Mendoza line in June as well.

Foster had one of the best starts of his season as he set a new career-high with nine strikeouts and came one out shy of tying his season high in innings pitched. Beck and Gervase have both been relievers with huge strikeout rates and struggles with walks this season, but they had none of the latter troubles in this game. Beck has walked more than one batter per inning but he has an even 18.0 K/9 in 2023 (42 strikeouts in 21.0 innings). Gervase has a slightly lower 14.0 K/9 in 2023 but also has been a bit better with walks and is holding hitters to an incredible .129 average against.

A: Lakeland Flying Tigers (36-44) 5, St. Lucie Mets (27-52) 2  Box Score

  • José Peraza DH: 3-for-5, R, .333/.400/.444
  • Jacob Reimer 3B: 2-for-4, BB, .284/.408/.392
  • Jett Williams CF: 0-for-4, BB, 2 K, SB, .224/.401/.355

The Mets had ten hits in Sunday’s game but could push across just two runs because of a 2-for-16 performance with runners in scoring position. Peraza was playing in his second rehab game with St. Lucie after missing a month and a half with an injury. After hitting .365/.467/.556 in June, Reimer is off to an even hotter .429/.444/.857 start to July. Yeral Martinez hit two balls over 108 MPH in this game, which is impressive velocity for anyone, let alone for a 20-year-old.

Ovalles pitched a perfect inning in his abbreviated start; he averaged 90.4 MPH on his fastball and had a 2800 RPM spin rate on his curveball. Atencio’s dreadful season continued with him giving up four runs in four innings of work. After having a 2.27 ERA at St. Lucie last year, his ERA has more than quadrupled at the same level in 2023. If there’s one bright side to his performance, his changeup was excellent: it generated a 41% whiff rate on 22 swings.
