Syracuse Mets (27-25) 9, Buffalo Bisons (21-28) 2 Box Score

Chris Mazza made his fourth start for Triple-A Syracuse and posted a strong outing in Buffalo. The right-handed pitcher, coming off a 7-inning performance in which he allowed only one run, made another strong start in which he lasted six innings and surrendered one run. Mazza allowed a solo home run to Buffalo in the second inning, but scattered three other hits across his start to dominate the Buffalo lineup.

Joe Zanghi came on in relief od Mazza to start the seventh inning, and he forced a flyout and groundout from the first two batters he faced. Zanghi then allowed a pair of doubles to give Buffao their second run of the contest. Paul Sewald and Tim Peterson contributed scoreless innings to close the game.

Syracuse posted a four-run first inning and never looked back in the win over Buffalo. The first four Mets all reached base to give Syracuse a 1-0 lead, and Dilson Herrera grounded out with the bases loaded to drive in a second run. A single off the bat of Arismendy Alcantara gave the Mets a 4-0 lead.

René Rivera continued his recent hot streak, clubbing a double in the second inning and a two-run home run in the fifth inning. Over his last 10 games, Rivera has three multi-hit games and two home runs to bring his OPS up to .867 on the season.

Binghamton Rumble Ponies (30-18) 9, Richmond Flying Squirrels (17-32) 4 Box Score

Starting pitcher Mickey Jannis cruised through his first four innings of work but ran into trouble in the fifth. Jannis allowed a walk and a single to lead off the inning, and a sacrifice bunt advanced the two base runners to second and third base. A wild pitch allowed a run to score, but a fielder’s choice and a strikeout ended the inning.

Reliever Ryley Gilliam entered with runners on first and third in the sixth inning. He allowed a run-scoring single to the first batter he faced, but went on to toss 1.2 innings with 3 strikeouts.

Top prospect Andrés Giménez failed to get a hit on the night, but he reached base three times on walks and scored every time he was on the base paths.

In the bottom of the third inning, right fielder Barrett Barnes was ejected from the game and Patrick Mazeika took his place in the lineup. Mazeika entered at first base, and first baseman Jason Krizan moved to left field. Left fielder Kevin Kaczmarski shifted to right field. Mazeika went on to collect three hits in his three at-bats.

Jupiter Hammerheads (15-35) 8, St. Lucie Mets (26-26) 3 Box Score

  • RHP Tony Dibrell (3-3, 2.26 ERA): 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R (ER), 3 BB, 6 K
  • RHP Joe Cavallaro (1-1, 6.75 ERA): 1.2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, BB, 2 K

Starting pitcher Tony Dibrell struggled early but recovered to put together a strong outing in St. Lucie. Victor Victor Mesa reached first base on an error to lead off the first inning. Dibrell then induced a flyout and a strikeout, but a two-out single scored Mesa to give Jupiter a 1-0 lead. Dibrell got the first two outs of the second inning, but then allowed four consecutive hammerheads to reach base to give Jupiter a 2-0 lead. Dibrell scattered two hits and a walk over his next three innings of work.

The bullpen struggled mightily in relief of Dibrell. Marcel Renteria and Joe Cavallaro both surrendered three runs to give Jupiter a commanding 8-3 win.

The St. Lucie offense scattered six hits and struggled to find a consistent rhythm at the plate. In the fourth inning, Carlos Cortes hit a one-out single, and he was followed by a Jeremy Vasquez walk. Quinn Brodey singled to score Cortes. Matt Winaker walked to load the bases, but Manny Rodriguez struck out to end the scoring threat.

Quinn Brodey drove home another run in the fifth inning on a one-out double. The center fielder drove in his third run of the night on a two-out single in the eighth inning.

Augusta Green Jackets (25-28) 3, Columbia Fireflies (20-33) 2 Box Score

Willy Taveras took the mound for the Fireflies and turned in a strong performance. The 21-year-old pitcher tossed six innings and allowed only one run on a solo home run in the fifth inning.

Both bullpen arms struggled for the Fireflies. Allan Winans allowed a solo home run in the seventh inning, and Alec Kisena surrendered a run in the top of the ninth inning. The three runs were enough for Augusta to clinch a 3-2 victory.

Top middle infield prospects Ronny Mauricio and Shervyen Newton performed well on Thursday night. Mauricio collected a pair of hits, including a run-scoring double in the third inning. Newton reached base three times for Columbia.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Fireflies trailed 3-1. Gerson Molina struck out to lead off the inning, but a single by Mauricio, a hit-by-pitch and a fielding error loaded the bases for Chase Chambers. Chambers grounded into a fore out at second base to score Mauricio. Newton came to the plate with two outs, and the second baseman grounded out to end the game.
