The Mets announced that Rafael Montero will wear #50 when he makes his major league debut against the Yankees at Citi Field on Wednesday night.

The last time Montero pitched in Queens, was when he started last year’s Futures Game for the World Team at Citi Field and was named to Baseball America’s First Team Minor League All-Star team.

Side Note:

Other notable players to wear #50 were Sid Fernandez, Benny Agbayani, Duaner Sanchez, and Sean Green.

According to ESPN New York‘s Adam Rubin, the Mets have chosen to promote right-hander Rafael Montero from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Montero, 23, will start Wednesday against the Yankees.  Jenrry Mejia will move to the bullpen, opening a spot for arguably the Mets second best pitching prospect behind Noah Syndergaard.

The 6’0, 185 pound Dominican native has pitched the entire season thus far with the Mets Pacific Coast League affiliate. In 41.2 innings for Las Vegas, he’s compiled a 3.67 ERA and has struck out 41 while walking just 18.
