Omar Quintanilla will be joining the New York Mets in the major leagues today as the Amazins look to sweep the New York Yankees in the Bronx tonight. However, his promotion didn’t come at the expense of Ruben Tejada. With two outs in the ninth of last night’s ballgame, Tejada slid while in pursuit of a foul ball, injuring his right quad muscle. This the same one he injured last season, missing seven weeks of action.

Quintanilla was pulled from last night’s game against the Reno Aces at Cashman Field, and was reported to be catching the red eye to New York. The Mets have officially put Tejada on the 15-day disabled list and transferred Frank Francisco to the 60-day disabled list. The move creates space for Q on the 40-man roster without having to remove anyone. Francisco joins Jenrry Mejia on the 60-day DL, but the young right hander is currently rehabbing with St. Lucie, so a roster decision will soon have to be made.

Tejada singled and scored in the Mets’ five-run first inning against Yankees’ starter David Phelps, but finished the game 1-for-5 with two strikeouts. In addition to that, he didn’t look focused in the field. What he did last night would have warranted a demotion in my eyes, but his injury saves him from having to head to Las Vegas. Tejada is hitting .209/.267/.262 with no homers and 10 RBIs in 187 at-bats this season.

Meanwhile, Quintanilla is enjoying an incredible hot streak that Terry Collins should try to ride, unlike when Juan Lagares was promoted from Vegas. Prior to being lifted in the contest against Reno, the shortstop recorded a hit in his only at-bat, extending his hitting streak to nine games. He’s now hitting .333/.419/.484 with two homers and 18 RBIs this season, including a .413 mark in May.

Since the Mets are facing a lefty tonight in Vidal Nuno, Adam Rubin said we could be seeing Justin Turner play short in favor of Q, who has been platooning in Triple-A. Collins has decided to ignore the platoon, and Q will start tonight against the left-hander.
