For the purpose of our series of posts, we define the word fringe as any prospects, which we considered, that were absent from MMN’s own Top 40 Prospect lists.  The purpose of the series is to identify prospects that are showing promise above what fans might expect and what their futures will hold within the Mets organization.

Darrell Ceclianni

Darrell Ceciliani – OF

DOB:  6/22/1990

Bats/Throws – Left/Left

2013 Stats – .268/.322/.380, 17 Doubles, 6 Triples, 6 HR, 44RBI

2013 Review:

In 2013, Ceciliani saw the most game action since beginning his professional career.  Drafted in the fourth round of the 2009 draft out of Columbia Basin (Wash.) Community College, he  played in 113 games and set career highs in hits, home runs, RBI, and stolen bases.  He also set a career high in strike outs, swinging and missing 105 times.  His slash line was significantly better against right-handed pitching then against south paws.

Prospect Outlook:

The numbers that Ceciliani has put up have warranted him being promoted each year within the Mets’ farm system.  He has a solid frame, and if he can translate that into some power numbers he is going to benefit the Mets in the next few years.  His maturity is coming around, as evident by his increase in home runs this past season.  His OBP is decent and he takes his fair share of walks.  He has the ability to steal some bags and was only caught stealing seven times in 2013.  My personal favorite part of Ceciliani is the lack of batting gloves when he steps into the batters box.

2014 Outlook:

If trends are something you believe in, then Ceciliani should be in Triple-A Las Vegas for 2014.  The problem I can see happening is that the 51’s may have a surplus of outfielders next year, especially if Juan Lagares is optioned back down after Spring Training.  Which would either keep him at Binghamton, or limit his at-bats with Las Vegas.  The two things that I would say will get him noticed for another promotion, whether it’s to Triple-A or the Bigs, is an increase in those power numbers and an improvement against left-handed pitching.
