Game two of the four-game series between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the Rome Braves was played on Saturday in front of 2,332 fans at Grayson Stadium.
All in attendance were treated to great game with an exciting finish. Rome tied the game at 3-3 in their half of the ninth inning, and Savannah answered with the game-winner in the bottom half of the ninth to end the game and win 4-3.
The Braves jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the third inning, when second baseman Gerald Chin reached on an infield hit and later scored on Connor Oliver‘s double. Rome’s switch-hitting catcher, Victor Caratini, would drive in the second run of the inning on a single.
Savannah would score three runs in the fifth inning to take the lead. Matt Oberste hit a single and would advance to second on a wild pitch. Cole Frenzel would single in the inning, and Jorge Rivero would drive in the first Sand Gnat run on a single of his own. Yeixon Ruiz two-run single would give Savannah a 3-2 lead that would hold up until the ninth inning.
Rome would tie the game 3-3 in the ninth on a wild pitch by the Sand Gnats relief pitcher Hunter Carnevale.
Champ Stuart started things off for Savannah drawing a lead-off walk. Dominic Smith would advance Stuart on a perfectly executed drag bunt between the pitcher and first base and would reach base safely. Matt Oberste did his job and advanced both runners on a sac-bunt. Rome decided to load the bases by intentionally walking Frenzel, setting the stage for Rivero’s game-winning line drive single to center scoring Stuart from third to end the game.
