New York Mets infield prospect Ronny Mauricio is getting an MRI on his ankle according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

Mauricio was originally hurt on a play on June 4, when he tried to tag a player that was stealing second base. Mauricio immediately left the game and it was later reported that he had a sprained ankle.

The Mets’ No. 2 prospect according to our list, would return to action on June 8 and play in four straight games for Syracuse before sitting out on Sunday.

In the four games after returning to the lineup, Mauricio was 2-for-16 at the plate with no extra base hits. On Saturday, Mauricio played in both ends of the doubleheader against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. He was 2-for-8 over the two games. In all four of the games, Mauricio played second base.

The 21-year-old is hitting .320/.360/.524 with 23 doubles, two triples, eight home runs. and 35 RBIs in 60 games for Triple-A Syracuse. Even with the missed games due to injuries, Mauricio leads the lead in hits, doubles, and extra base hits.

Mauricio played shortstop exclusively in his minor league career before moving to second base in late April this year. Since the move, he has played only played three games at shortstop. Mauricio, prior to the injury, was expected to start learning left field as well.

Heyman also reported if Mauricio is healthy, he could be a call-up candidate in the near future. Later, Heyman qualified the statement saying Mauricio “could” be a candidate for a promotion.
