The Binghamton Rumble Ponies trailed the Somerset Patriots 3-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth. With this being the top end of a doubleheader, it was a seven inning game meaning it was late and close.

Patriots pitcher Will Warren had been on cruise control, but he finally hit a speed bump. The Rumble Ponies had consecutive two-out base hits to pull within 3-2.

Warren just needed to make one more pitch to get out of the inning. Instead, he’d leave one out over the middle of the plate, and Ronny Mauricio would do the rest:

The ball easily carried over the tall right field wall at Mirabito Stadium for a go-ahead three-run homer. There hasn’t been an estimated distance, but you can see that ball went a very long way.

That was arguably Mauricio’s biggest hit of the year both in terms of distance and magnitude. While it gets lost with Francisco Álvarez and Brett Baty on the roster, Mauricio has game-changing power. Certainly, his power changed the outcome of this game.

It would be Mauricio’s seventh homer of the year. That’s tied for 15th most in the Eastern League, and it’s the second-most in the league by a shortstop.

For Mauricio, this homer was right on cue for him. As he has done for most of his professional career, he struggled over the second month of the season. Typically speaking, he follows that with a big month.

Mauricio finished May with a .693 OPS, which is over a hundred points lower than the .796 he posted in April. With his power, we know Mauricio is capable of more, and we saw it with that homer.

When Mauricio gets a hold of one, it can go a long way. When he gets a hold of one, good things happen. The key for him is to build off of these moments.
