Despite being nearly four years younger than his average opponent, Columbia Fireflies shortstop Ronny Mauricio has been named to the South Atlantic League All-Star team. Mauricio is the lone representative from the Fireflies, although pitching coach Royce Ring will be on the coaching staff.
Mauricio’s full-season debut in 2019 has generally gone better than expected. He hit .286 in April before dropping to .278 in May despite seeing increases in on-base percentage and slugging. Fangraphs ranked him as the third-best prospect in the organization this past spring.
“I am extremely proud and happy for him,” Fireflies manager Pedro Lopez said in a news release. “He’s been the most consistent hitter that we have. The opportunity for him to go out there and have a little fun with other players from around the league, I think he’ll have a great time.”
The 2019 South Atlantic League All-Star Game will be held on June 18 in Charleston, West Virginia.
