According to Daniel Alvarez-Montes of El Extrabase, the New York Mets are expected to call up Ronny Mauricio from Triple-A Syracuse. Joel Sherman of The New York Post confirmed the report. The 22-year old is expected to join the Mets on Friday at Citi Field when the rosters expand to 28.
Mauricio, a switch-hitter who can also play multiple positions in the field was signed by the Mets to a minor league contract in 2017 with what was then a Mets record high signing bonus.
He was promoted to Single-A Colombia in 2019 and split the 2021 season between High-A Brooklyn and AA-Binghamton. He stayed in Binghamton through the 2022 season.
After batting .259/.296/.472, with a .768 OPS in AA-Binghamton, Mauricio was romoted to Triple-A Syracuse where he has spent the 2023 season so far. As reported, it is expected his time in Triple-A will come to an end Friday when he gets his highly-anticipated call-up to join the big league club in New York.
So far this season in Triple-A, MLB’s No. 91 prospect has racked up a 20-20 season, slashing .292/.346/.506, with a .852 OPS. He has 30 doubles, three triples, 23 home runs, 76 runs scored, and 71 RBI’s. He has walked 35 times. Mauricio has also shown off his speed with 24 stolen bases and has only been caught steeling seven times.
In the month of August alone, Mauricio has a hit in 20 of 24 games. He has batted .288/.357, with a .558 SLG this month including seven home runs and 15 RBI’s. The switch-hitter has a 131 wRC+ this month as well, along with eight stolen bases and 11 walks, which per Michael Mayer of Metsmerized are both career-highs for any month for Mauricio.
Mauricio in 2023 has played second base, shortstop, and left field for Triple-A Syracuse. Combined he only has nine errors in 108 games between the three positions, which along with his strong ability to put the ball in play at the plate, makes him a highly valuable resource to help the Mets win.
Since August 15, Mauricio has exclusively played second base.
In his first few games with the big league club, many will be looking to see where Showalter ends up putting the 22-year old and how he can benefit the Mets lineup at the plate.
Mauricio was named an MiLB.com organization All-Star in 2019, 2021, and 2022 and has proved himself in 2023 in Syracuse.
When he joins the Mets on Friday, they will be opening a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners at home at Citi Field.
